With DeSantis rising in popularity among Republicans, it’s important to take a closer look at the culture wars he could ignite in his bid for the presidency. They begin with his “Stop WOKE Act”—which just took on an AP African American Studies course. I write about that and more in today’s piece.

DeSantis’s “War on Woke” Is As Troubling As We Feared

In the spirit of taking a closer look at the new and frankly increasingly disturbing crop of GOP leaders, let’s head down to the political swamplands of Florida to examine the education and culture wars recently ignited by Gov. Ron DeSantis. These provide a preview of what we might expect to hear more regularly as DeSantis weighs a primary challenge to reigning MAGA king Donald Trump.

Great freakout record, found in a small town record shop today - there’s a section where Ron Carter and Airto trade bass and berimbau solos. Recorded live the month before Flora Purim started her prison term for cocaine possession

Finished Kate Beaton’s Ducks today and thought it was so well done. Although had a hard time reconciling this moving memoir with my only other encounter with Beaton’s work- reading my kid the amazing story of a princess and her flatulent pony (The Princess and the Pony is a must if you have a picture book need)

D&Q also did such good work with the book. The oil slick duck on the cover under a textured DJ was a nice touch

In November, I wrote, for my own tiny audience, about art as energy packets.

It made sense to me.

These are not my children — Gabriel Liston

I am fond of my paintings, but they are not my children.  It feels more accurate and useful to think of them as packets of energy. It is fine to think of my children as packets of energy, so long as you do not mistake them for energy in a constant state of expenditure. You know how I’ve

When people travel to the past, they worry about radically changing the present by doing something small.

Few people think that they can radically change the future by doing something small in the present.

This is the only real time travel paradox.
