Libre Office is also free and includes a QR code and barcode generator too! This saved me from having to hunt down a standalone generator that wasn't completely sketchy when I needed a barcode for some freelance work. Plus it can replace Microsoft Office.

Great idea, thanks! Bookmarked.

As chance would have it, I also built another useful thing, way back in 2015:

https://batterystaple.pw/ - generates secure #Passphrases entirely in your browser

Like you, I built it because I was not happy with the existing alternatives. Since then, I have been using it quite regularly, but I have no idea if anybody else uses it (nor a way to find out).

In any case, I will gladly continue to pay for the domain name!

@gabe_sky ha! I built something similar specifically for WiFi QR codes!

@gabe_sky@infosec.exchange Nice! We did a similar thing with https://libera.codes/

Libera.Codes - Free, privacy-first QR Codes - no ads, no trackers!

@gabe_sky Big fan of single page "websites" that folk can download to use locally, this is one of mine (ugly code, still being tinkered with) https://thegeoff.net/hazprint/

Announcing: https://justaqrcode.com.

Tired of "free" QR code generators that are full of ads and trackers, that share your data, and that want to sell you something? Me too. Here's my act of resistance: I made a one-page site that works entirely in your browser to generate a simple QR code. And that's all it does. You can download the HTML page and run it locally, even. Read the source; nothing up my sleeves. Just a QR code.

My offer to you -- I will continue to pay for the domain name and web hosting for it, myself. If you find it valuable, you can pay it back by creating your own useful thing for the world and releasing it for free. Let's take back the friendly web, one vexingly-monetized utility at a time!

Interesting article pondering the difference between an AI knowing what all the different times look like on an analog clock face -- versus actually understanding how to tell time. Melting clocks pose a problem, suggesting time-telling might just be good pattern matching rather than a real skill. https://www.unite.ai/ais-struggle-to-read-analogue-clocks-may-have-deeper-significance/
AI’s Struggle to Read Analogue Clocks May Have Deeper Significance

A new paper from researchers in China and Spain finds that even advanced multimodal AI models such as GPT-4.1 struggle to tell the time from images of analog clocks. Small visual changes in the clocks can cause major interpretation errors, and fine-tuning only helps with familiar examples. The results raise concerns about the reliability of […]
