@ProPublica @all-stories-ProPublica The carbon capture/green hydrogen scam: advocated by researchers with no technical expertise in the technology; funded and promoted by people at BP who didn't think it would work (but thought it would help them extract more fossil fuel); lapped up by the corporatocracy and their gullible politicians (that would be you, Ed) to the detriment of better policies.

How BP Execs Influenced a Climate Study That Shaped a Generation of Global Policy

BP sponsored an elite Princeton research center to address the climate problem without getting off fossil fuels. Its key work, a paper known as “Wedges,” guided climate discourse for a generation.

But if they were white and from South Africa?

@RichRARobi Momentum-backed Burnham, the authoritarian corporatocracy continuation candidate, with an improved, less robotic, style of speech?

Here's the new boss, same as the old boss.

"Meet James Purnell. Andy Burnham's chief of staff. He supported Iraq invasion; ex chair of Labour Friends of Israel; said that Winter Fuel Allowance and free bus passes should not be sacred; supported PFI, lie-detector tests for benefit claimants. Next?" -- Prem Sikka (on the former bird site)

Reeves syllogism:
1. Encourage UK personal tax-free investments in Stocks & Shares by limiting tax-free investments in cash accounts.
2. But S&S investments can be turned into cash accounts.
3. Therefore tax interest on "tax-free" S&S investments to discourage them being used to by-pass the cash investment limits. Bob's Your Uncle!

Poor pensioners, etc.: 😵‍💫

Meanwhile, billionaires and private equity continue to profiteer and asset strip while avoiding tax.

Reeves announces new tax of stocks and shares ISAs to stop savers from exploiting new HMRC rules

Rules will be introduced to prevent people subscribing up to £20,000 cash in a non-cash Isa and leaving it there long-term, earning tax-free interest

@Lats @xs4me2 @pvonhellermannn COP climate scientists' methodology excluded any recent, alarming, research into sea levels, acidification, ice-melt, AMOC etc. from their models. And lobbyists watered things down further. This lowered assessments of risk, and error bounds. Then policy makers adopted a max CO2 concentration that only had at best a 50% chance of meeting their 1.5C limit even according to these conservative models, ... and then did nothing, except adopt policies that make it worse.

#ClimateDiary “Above is a fictional weather forecast for August 18, 2050, broadcast by French television in 2014, intended to warn against the disastrous consequences of global warming.

Below is the weather forecast for June 22, 2026.”

This brings out super starkly how #ClimateChange has accelerated so much more quickly than we thought even just 12 years ago.

@Orb2069 @benchwhistler @wavesculptor @urlyman Unfortunately we need to protect against both extreme heat and extreme cold.

For instance, my heat pump will eventually need to be upgraded to ground source, if the AMOC flip-over happens. At least we have the piping now, but the cost of replacing gas boilers with **air source** heat pumps was already looking like it would take too long, given current government subsidies and climate denying propaganda. Ground source generally costs several times more.

Meanwhile for extreme heat, efficient passive cooling solutions such as external shutters and ventilation towers as are used in hotter countries generally need planning permission.

If we're lucky solar installations will keep up with AC, but even that is doubtful given the data center boom.

So we're not ready in either direction, and that's only a tiny part of the puzzle.

The complete loss of cold years in the Arctic since the 1980s is astounding. The last "blue" stripe was 1992, following the Pinatubo Volcano eruption in the summer of 1991. #ShowYourStripes #Climate #Arctic
