Social media sites will start closing children's accounts in Australian
Australia is set to enforce its age limit for social media accounts starting next week, and the platforms must provide monthly reports on how many children's accounts they have closed or face fines. Australian Communications Minister Anika Wells said Wednesday the platforms would face fines of up to $33 million if the regulator enforcing the age limit identifies systemic breaches. Facebook, Instagram, Kick, Reddit, Snapchat, Threads, TikTok, X and YouTube will be subject to the requirement starting Dec. 10, and Twitch was recently added to the platforms with age restrictions. Critics argue the law doesnβt enhance online safety. A court challenge is pending, but the government insists the law will proceed as planned.
