To be fair, Fedi does have it's own version of fake external moderation.
Defederation is real if you have authorized fetch on and the public API off.
Instance blocks against individual users are just pretend, though.
I still am not convinced that moderation is meaningfully possible on AtProto.
Labels are not moderation and do not actually do anything.
The BlueSky app is able to do seemingly effective internal moderation because they control the full stack of PDS, AppView, relay and client.
Plausibly BlackSky can also do a similar level of internal moderation, and BlueSky and BlackSky would benefit from each other's internal moderation.
But AtProto relays make external moderation pretty meaningless.
Defining "internal moderation" is moderation of a server's users by that server's mod team.
Defining "external moderation" as moderating foreign users by a given server's mod team.
Internal moderation is shared. External moderation is not.
On centralized social networks, moderation is only handled by the company that owns the social network.
On Fedi, you benefit from:
- the internal moderation on your server,
- the external moderation on your server, and
- the internal moderation on every server you federate with.
You do not benefit from the external moderation from other servers on Fedi.
Comedy really does not age well.
I think this is the one I was looking for.
It's kind of remarkable how much different this sort of ad would be, if it was made today.
It's surprisingly hard to find old campaign ads.
