Let’s take this opportunity to bring attention to the advances made in the protection of refugee rights as a result of that decision, but also to reflect upon the state of refugee rights in Canada, in a time of rising anti-immigrant sentiment, divisive rhetoric among some leaders, and setbacks like the cuts to refugee health care and the new Bill C-12 legislation, that threaten refugee protections and supports. We’re better together.

Today is Refugee Rights Day in Canada, celebrated each year on April 4th, the anniversary of the Supreme Court’s 1985 ruling that stated that the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms protects the fundamental rights of refugees, guaranteeing them the right to an oral hearing.

»» These cuts take effect May 1, 2026, and will immediately harm refugees, who are already struggling to meet basic needs, like food and housing. These co-payments function as a denial of care - refugees’ health will worsen, more individuals will unnecessarily end up in already strained emergency departments and hospitals, and health care costs will rise. Financially, the co-payment plan will cost Canada more, not less. »»
