Mainstream politicians thought adopting far-right policies would keep the far right away from power.

But beating people at borders, sending them to torture, letting kids drown en masse - all Europe’s immorality & illegality - it’s only fed the bloodlust at the core of far-right extremism.

Collapse of Dutch Government Highlights Europe’s New Migration Politics

Prime Minister Mark Rutte resigned after his coalition partners rejected his tough new line on refugees, favoring his own political future, critics say, over compromise.

This is REALLY important.

“In Finland, the number of homeless people has fallen sharply. Those affected receive a small apartment and counselling with no preconditions. 4 out of 5 people affected make their way back into a stable life. And all this is CHEAPER than accepting homelessness.”

Let that sink in. It costs less than accepting homelessness.

imagine an easy to deploy self-hosted identity service, and a browser which supports OIDC natively.

websites could simply signal how to log in automatically via OIDC, and the browser could automatically follow this flow, thus enabling internet-wide single sign-on

@darius I think about the NHS digital design standards all the time, where the standard is functionally "your target audience is a fifteen-year-old for whom english is a second language. They're using a 6 year old android phone that's been handed down twice, and they are sitting in a hospital emergency waiting room trying to look up information in the middle of the most terrifying night they have ever had. Your site must work for that person, at that moment."

As far as being stewards of the Internet, I can't think of a better pick than the US and US-based companies.

But when it comes to privacy, I don't care that the EU can be just as bad, I still prefer data to be in the EU. And that's because of a simple fact: non-US citizens have no rights in the US. Also, the #GDPR does work and is great for privacy.

Silicon Valley's elite are either disingenuous about the impact of EU's data protection laws, or dumb as rocks, take your pick.
