@thomasfuchs good memories of one of my most expensive PC gaming week-end back in the late 90s.
On friday I bought a nVidia TNT 2 Ultra 32MB to replace the Voodoo 1 4MB in my PC. Only to discover that Starsiege Tribes OpenGL rendering had depth culling bugs (parts of objects jumping in front of other from frame to frame).
So logically, the next day I went back to the store to get a Voodoo 2 12MB to be able to play my favorite game in Glide stability.
Now GPUs cost more than a kidney... they cost a kid. I forgot the name we gave the kid I traded a few years ago for the RTX 4090. 😁

@charles @sebsauvage en 2026 j’espĂšre que ffmpeg arrive sans trop d'efforts a utiliser l'accĂ©lĂ©ration hardware proposĂ©e en standard par les GPU AMD, Intel et nVidia.
Si la cible est juste le décodage/encodage, un petit GPU Intel serie A ferait le boulot :
- passage en AV1 initial.
- ré-encodage à la volée si nécessaire pour le client.

@sebsauvage je veux bien croire qu'il y ait une différence a bitrate équivalent. Mais si ta source est h264 ou h265 le carnage est déjà fait.

Par exemple, mes anciens enregistrements Xbox Series X en h264 60fps a toute vitesse dans la jungle de Forza Horizon 5 = macro blocking du sol au plafond. C'est irrécupérable. Alors qu'avec une source de bonne qualité le résultat reste acceptable malgré un bitrate AV1 bas et la recompression YouTube.

@sebsauvage et l’idĂ©e d’utiliser un GPU pour faire le boulot. Reencoder des enregistrements OBS Studio 1440p60 AV1 lors de l’export pour YouTube tourne entre 120 et 250fps sur RTX40x0.
