It was really satisfying to be able to squeeze in 8 levels each with a boss fight. A very late addition to the game was that after each boss fight there is a simplified upgrade screen. Upgrading was such a big part of the first game that I didn't want to miss it out entirely even though the new ship/weapon mechanics are now the main focus. #Pico8

My big idea for Dominion Ex 2 has ended up being that each ship has a different weapon and different move speed and rarity. Ships can be collected throughout the game, but if a ship is lost it takes the weapon with it. This started off with the desire to have *more* ships and *more* weapons but having to compromise with the #Pico8 two action buttons, one of which has to be 'shoot'. It's neat because if you lose your last ship, it really is game over, you've not just run out of abstract 'lives'.
