'Many individuals have jumped ship to smaller platforms such as Mastodon, Threads and Bluesky. In contrast, many research organisations remain on deck, playing to a diminishing audience. Until recently, I was one of them and before you read this as one of those melodramatic ‘I quit’ notices, this post is about what happens to these organisations.'

If ‘academic X’ is sinking, where are research organisations going?

For research communications professionals and academics, X can feel a little like being the band on the Titanic, defiantly playing on as the once great ship slides under the water. As a number of a…

Welcome the latest addition to the tidyverse: duckplyr! 🎉

https://duckplyr.tidyverse.org/

The duckplyr package aims to be a fully compatible drop-in replacement for dplyr, using duckdb when it can for performance, and always giving the same results as plain dplyr. If you haven't seen it yet, give it a try and tell us how it works for you!

A DuckDB-Backed Version of dplyr

A drop-in replacement for dplyr, powered by DuckDB for performance. Offers convenient utilities for working with in-memory and larger-than-memory data while retaining full dplyr compatibility.

Have you ever given a presentation and wished you had an #rstats or #python console right there in your slides with you? Based on a great suggestion from a webR user, Quarto Drop is a #quarto extension that adds a fullscreen interactive console and code editor directly into a #quarto reveal.js presentation. The console is powered by #wasm, using #webR or #pyodide, and can be dropped down from above or hidden away with the click of a button or a shortcut key.

@yy bold way to start your paper and first figure: "The idea of building large structures from small building blocks has had a long history in the human imagination, from the beautifully intricate shells assembled from silica by unicellular algae to the Egyptian pyramids built from stone."

Rebuilding FourSquare for ActivityPub using OpenStreetMap

I used to like the original FourSquare. The "mayor" stuff was a bit silly, and my friends never left that many reviews, but I loved being able to signal to my friends "I am at this cool museum" or "We're at this pub if you want to meet" or "Spending the day at the park". So, is there a way to recreate that early Web 2.0 experience with open data and ActivityPub? Let's find out! This quest is…

@manlius @teixi @yoginho @junosz @axoaxonic @beneuroscience @cyrilpedia @DrYohanJohn Yes, the writing is really ambiguous. In any case, I think the preprint will improve if it acknowledges the vast literature of temporal and multilayer networks. Some of the ideas in the preprint are already contained in the literature. For example, we (and many other) found that temporal networks are intrinsically different than their static aggregated representations
