How do algorithms decide what content you see online? Is there really no way to prevent the misuse of social media to spread disinformation and hate? Online platforms must be transparent and accountable for what their algorithms decide to promote. It's time we make this happen. Starting today, we're setting up a European Centre for Algorithmic Transparency in Sevilla, Spain. This is one of the many measures in our new #DigitalServicesAct. I've figured out what pisses me off so much about Facebook's Galactica demo.

It's not because people can use to to write bad essays for their homework. There are plenty of large language models that can do that. It's because Facebook is presenting it as something that it most definitely is not.

Facebook is selling it as a knowledge engine, a "new interface to access and manipulate what we know about the universe."

Actually it's just a random bullshit generator.

One of the things that struck me when I first got here was how much more "geographical" the fediverse is than other social networks. The instances looked, to my newcomer eyes, like small places, villages, or large crowded cities. With my background, I could not see any other solution than to try to draw a map of this neighborhood 😅 . The result is a little mashup between mastovue by @Luca and a network map. Interactive version here: https://www.comeetie.fr/galerie/mapstodon/ and feedbacks welcomed. #mapstdon

Appendix The list of the instances of Mastodon is a scrapped from the Mastodon website on november 14, 2022, via this notebook. We keep only the instances whose number of users is at least 10. Now, let's get location informations with ipapi. The requests look like this: `http://ip-api.com/json/m.rthome.me`. You can test them in your web browser. Here, in order for all the requests to pass, they must be launched every 1000 milliseconds. So it takes time. That's why the result has been saved in an attached fi

Twitter will disconnect thousands of microservices soon. Those microservices provide a lot of information about tweets. Some research analyses and models depend critically on them. For example, the phone model is used in many analyses or estimations of socio-economic statuses. Those changes in Twitter will dramatically impact #computationalsocialscience in the future
Some reports estimate that around 1M people have left #twitter in the last weeks https://www.technologyreview.com/2022/11/03/1062752/twitter-may-have-lost-more-than-a-million-users-since-elon-musk-took-over/. At the same time #mastodon has grown in 860k users since Nov 4th. Here is the plot of the number of users in the #mastodon instances at http://instances.social in the last months.
Twitter may have lost more than a million users since Elon Musk took over

Estimates from Bot Sentinel suggest that more than 875,000 users deactivated their accounts between October 27 and November 1, while half a million more were suspended.
