I was introduced to Apple by learning BASIC on a IIe when I was 7. So, this morning, I thought I’d write a little “Happy Birthday, Apple” program in BASIC. But there's no basic interpreter for the Mac! So I Apple dorked all the way out and wrote one for my 7-year-old.

I remember the late '00s, the avalanche of constitutional amendments banning gay marriage. I remember the fear, the hate, the huge support for those measures. And now massive majorities support gay marriage. *Massive*.

We win by being visible.

I want to repeat that.

We win by being visible.

All of our research shows that the main way to deradicalize a bigot is for a member of the group they hate to be just... visible. Unremarkable. It doesn't work on everyone, of course, but the lies and fear and hatred that radical bigotry relies on at the most basic levels *CANNOT* survive contact with reality for long.

Being visible is how we beat this. It always has been. It always will be.

Being visible changes the world.

When they fight us, we fight back harder. Listen to your elders.

The notion of a broken clock being sometimes right is based on a gross misunderstanding of what information is.

A clock that always shows the same time is never right, even in the moments of the day when the time happens to be what it shows, because you don't gain any information about what time it is by looking at the clock.

This reasoning also applies to chatbots. If you can't tell whether what you have been given is useful information unless you alreay know the information, then you haven't been given useful information.

I watched two Coding Train videos tonight, one on Weighted Voronoi Stipling, and another on drawing and animating the Dragon Fractal. His videos always remind me how much I love programming as an art, a game, and a means of exploration.

I thought the sign read
“Haiku Club” not “Hiking Club.”
We walked for hours. Hours.

What if I could convince you that taking the same time to explain detailed requirements and carefully validate results with a junior colleague instead of a chatbot would not only give you two people who understood the code instead of zero, but if you do it a few times in a row you eventually get a senior colleague out of the deal for free.

"I’ve been involved in protest movements for 24 years now (maybe it’s cheesy, but I picked a specific protest as my starting point) and I’ve never seen a population so united, and it’s not even close."

Birds Before the Storm

You can’t detain a 5 year old child.

If a masked man grabs a kid off the street and puts him in an unmarked car… that’s kidnapping.

If that child is then sent to another state? That’s trafficking.

Language matters here.

What happened to Liam Ramos should outrage us all.
