Hi! I do civic tech, product, and org design, currently in government.

My happy place is down a rabbithole, occasionally ejecting content as a proof of life. Posts usually about software, with some politics, history and philosophy thrown in, but secretly still about software.

Heads-up for published authors:

The deadline to join the Anthropic class-action copyright settlement is March 30. If you have published a book, you may be eligible to receive ~$1,500 per book, so it’s worth your time to check it out.

I had been putting it off and finally completed my forms last week.

@tmcfarlane I'll just hang tight. I know you'll get to full marshmallow-based visceral surveillance technologies soon.

@tmcfarlane ohhh I love it!!! Or even marshmallow-training-program.com , where subscribe to get one marshmallow this month or two next month or three the following month or... Build your marshmallow resistance capacity!

(And then as soon as someone asks for their marshmallows, the company folds.)

I'm a proud Marshmallow Test Failer now.

Under current levels of chaos, should I really trust your marshmallow inventory predictions? Your choice of me to receive potentially scarce marshmallows? Your enthusiasm to subsidize the corn syrup industry?

It's not personal. But I'd like the marshmallow, please.

Shleicher wrote this in 2022 about exams, not even AI.

More evidence that LLMs are just accelerating societal trends and putting more strain on structural deficiencies, rather than ushering in something truly new.

I’m winding down with two excellent clients I’ve been working with since January, which means I’ve got some availability for new work coming up soon.

If you need a designer who thinks deeply about systems and teams, and who will ooh and/or ahh over an especially pretty serif, I’d love to chat with you!

Hi, I’m Ethan. I’m a web designer who helps companies make beautiful sites and services that work everywhere.

@elizayer Not stopping search results from appearing, but you can import this blocklist into ublock origin: https://github.com/laylavish/uBlockOrigin-HUGE-AI-Blocklist

Edit: Wait, perhaps it does work with search engines, but it seems only for images.

@tuban_muzuru But an LLM will always be approximate no matter how it's trained? That's the nature of stochastic text extrusion?

Of course, I'd still rather they had high-quality inputs... but short of having every text snippet represent a "complete thought" (whatever that is) and be traceable to one of the input sources, I'm struggling to see how we get to "exact" rather than merely "better."

@rhelune 😍 That's great, thank you!!
