With mastodon.social slammed with new users and my old home at .xyz a bit dead, I've been looking for an alternative to use as my mastodon 'home base'. I knew I wanted a mostly general interest instance, big enough for the federated feed to be good for organic discovery and where my varied interests wouldn't kill the local feed vibe.

Spent time looking this weekend and think universeodon.com ticks all my boxes. I'll still be hanging out at defcon.soc for infosec.

I can't help but notice many toots from helpful newbies encouraging you to support the Mastodon Patreon.

It's fine to do that but understand it goes to just two big instances and the official Mastodon dev team.

It does NOT trickle down to YOUR instance. If you want to support your server, donate to it directly. Nearly all the costs of the explosive growth of the past few weeks is borne by local instances.

Mastodon is decentralized. There is no Mastodon Inc. This is not Twitter.

How it started How it's going
I know people are looking for options in this post-#twitter world, but I really just need people to understand that #tumblr and mastodon serve two very different purposes in the social web ecosystem.
My new favorite type of reply on Twitter is people tagging @EFF to let them know that their Director of Cybersecurity is critical of the new policies on the bird site and is probably a Democrat and/or a liberal.
May eventually be moving over to @elfgirl - if you see a follow from there, it's me setting up house. Still waffling about moving completely or not.
Twitter was special. But it's time to leave

Tweets were always short-lived. Turns out Twitter was too.

That chick that you've seen around the web forever but can never remember her name. elfgirl many places.

Advises business leaders on what's coming that might fuck up how their world currently works. Sometimes they listen.

Always looking for a new social web platform to abandon. Still uses #tumblr daily so clearly not to be trusted.

Elon Musk tweeted an image on a whiteboard from a "Twitter HQ code review" that wrapped up early Saturday. The image has attracted nearly 12k upvotes and over 1,000 comments over at the subreddit r/ProgrammerHumor, under the title "Twitter for Dummies". The image itself is an architecture schematic, not code. I put it on a Miro Board and Luke Dubois and Mark Hansen helped annotate it.
