When we reduce that to "gothic romance with violence", we strip all the strength from the story, and lose something that could have direct impact on our lives today. It's a shame, and del Toro should know better.

Remember too, it's BARON Frankenstein...literally *land owners* . It's a story about how people are torn out of their natural state by rich industrialists, warped into something new, and then hated and mistreated for not existing in traditional roles.

The poor are brutally used for the ego-gratification of the rich, who are then horrified by the power of what the poor turn into. When the poor go to the rich to demand equality, the rich first agree, then betray, and the poor seek revenge.

Communism - the creature is literally a conglomerate.

Frankenstein isn’t a story of a monster, it is a story of the Industrial Revolution, its impact on the poor, and perhaps even proto-Communism.

It saddens me that the latest Frankenstein feels like it reduces the story to surface level things and ignores the underlying metaphors. It felt like a “gothic’ version of a cyan/magenta Cyberpunk foray. Pretty, but empty.
