Welcome! You are invited to join a meeting: Pragmatist Thermodynamics for the 21st Century: Carsten Herrmann-Pillath . After registering, you will receive a confirmation email about joining the meeting.
In the 19th century, Classical thermodynamics (CT) became intertwined with human practices through the spread of ideas such as “efficiency” and “energy,” particularly in economic contexts. This integration was scientifically grounded in Paul Samuelson’s mid-20th century interpretation of CT in his landmark formulation of equilibrium economics. The talk refers to this combination of CT and human practices as “Lived Thermodynamics” and introduces a philosophical framework called “Pragmatist Thermodynamics” (PT). PT draws on the early synthesis of thermodynamics and evolutionary theory proposed by Charles S. Peirce, especially his ontology of tychism, evolution and finality. PT comprises three categories of linguistic representations of thermodynamics: the formal mathematical theory, simulation algorithms, and natural language. The primary medium of Lived Thermodynamics is natural language. Therefore, a significant task of PT is to make the concepts of out-of-equilibrium thermodynamics (OET) and the general idea of entropy relevant to everyday human practices.
