Sophie Poe's latest remarkable portrait of a museum:

Women's Museum, Bait Al Banat, Dubai

https://splaces.home.blog/2026/03/17/womens-museum-bait-al-banat-dubai-the-uae-17-feb-2026/

"This is, after all, a museum ostensibly created by women, for women. And still, the voices that structure it feel curiously external. The interpretive framework leans heavily on authority—political, religious, historical—and that authority remains, overwhelmingly, male. You hear men speaking about women far more often than you hear women speaking for themselves."

Shamrock Splashers today raised $50K for Save the Bay's beach program. The wind was light, the air was relatively warm, the water reminded us that last month large chunks of Boston Harbor were frozen.

Off to East Boston in a few hours for the Shamrock Splash, which raises money for local beach events:

Here's a photo from last year's Splash. Today will be much warmer, which will be particularly welcome after the apparently endless snow and ice here.

Coping with catastrophe

Japan incorporates more disaster planning into its buildings and public spaces than any other nation. Miho Mazereeuw’s new book explains how they do it.

“Wherever you can invent design outcomes to help society be more resilient beforehand, it is not at exorbitant cost. You can design for exceptional everyday spaces but embed other infrastructure and flexibility in there."
