Excellent news! We got a small amount of funding to hire two people half time to help put together a Horizon Europe proposal for Safeguarding Research and Culture [1].

The idea is to develop the SciOp catalogue software to make distributed archives part of the Fediverse, riding on BitTorrent, and get more institutions, libraries and archives involved. With a focus, in this case, on Europe.

If you are interested in preventing digital cultural heritage materials from falling through the memory hole, preventing marginalised and racialised groups from being erased from view, decentralised, federated and peer to peer technologies and have experience with putting together EU Horizon grant proposals, have the right to work in the EU or UK and would like a part time job starting yesterday for a couple of months, please get in touch!

@ck0 followed by doing some stretch and curling to nap on top of the server?
@Sythelux without ever thinking whether that "book" actually exists or whether the chat bot is simply roleplaying by stringing together words that look like what a coauthor would have written.

@nixCraft though you have to admit that even back then, the corpo were already trying hard to attach some strings into all the examples you list, with various levels of success, ranging from "never caugh on" (CD from Sony), to become part of the standard even if useless (CSS on DVD, also eventually Macrovision on videotape), to actual pain in the butt (DRM in games and software).

Even more reason to support the alternatives!

@essentiel @Goneri c'est triste que vous n'ayiez pas la democracie directe chez vous...

“Invest in data resources to make FAIR a reality” was just published in Nature. Our director, @dessimoz, signed this correspondence with 2018 Chemistry Nobel prize laureate Frances Arnold, 1993 Medicine Nobel prize laureate Richard J. Roberts, and Tim Hubbard.

@jimray warning: body horror, freudian self destruction, etc. It's Sunji Ito, after all.
But, I find funny how the "inescapable horror" plot device there suddenly has become a metaphore of what the big corp try to do now.
I guess it's almost a Torment Nexus...
@jimray The plot device in Sunji Ito's "The Enigma of Amigara Fault" manga of "made for you" personalized holes on a mountain into which lonely people feel irresistibly compelled to enter despite certain doom...
suddenly an apt metaphore about modern AI-slop filled corporate social media.
@SecurityWriter don't worry, "Cloud play" will also bring this "no matter how fast your device is" crap to gaming - the last bastion where high end current generation *local* hardware used to make a difference.
@jimray might be spurious coincidence, but large parts of Switzerland dine at 6pm (to the point it's a cliche about german-speakers), and Switzerland didn't take part in the two world war last century.
Just saying
