On 1st February 2025, The Carpentries completed its transition from a fiscally sponsored organisation to an independent 501(c)(3) nonprofit. Over the past year, the Executive Team undertook a formal evaluation to understand how this shift has affected our mission delivery, governance, finances, and relationships with our community. This post summarises the main themes that emerged. Being independent has given The Carpentries greater latitude to make decisions that reflect our values and long-term strategy. This has been particularly important in a changing funding landscape. Our experience navigating a major federal proposal independently, and ultimately declining an award whose conditions conflicted with our commitment to inclusivity, underscored the importance of organisational autonomy and reinforced the role we intend to play as a values-led organisation in the open science ecosystem. Our leadership and decision influenced the Python Software Foundation to also reject federal funding on the same grounds.
@useR_conf @thecarpentries So glad and proud that useR! 2026 is having @drkariljordan as a keynote!
Highly recommended to anyone who wants to be inspired and learn about community and education.
We are thrilled with the renewed attention that The Carpentries has received for deciding to withdraw a $1.5 million proposal to the National Science Foundation (NSF), thanks to a recent similar decision made by the Python Software Foundation (@ThePSF) and the shout-out they gave us when they announced it.
PSF raised $65K+ within 24 hours of making their announcement, an amount which rose to $135K+ within a week in solidarity funds from 1400+ donors and 270+ new members. This is incredible financial support to PSF from the Python community!
The Carpentries has an open appeal to our community and the general public for donations and sponsorships to help us make up the shortfall in funds due to our proposal withdrawal. We are deeply grateful for the encouragement and solidarity we received in response. We value all contributions!
Our choice came with financial challenges. In the context of our operating budget ($1.2 million in 2024), $1.5 million is a significant amount of money. The loss of those anticipated NSF funds, therefore, represents a substantial impact on our sustainability.
With this renewed attention to values-based decision making, we would like to use this opportunity to highlight The Carpentries' continued need for financial support. We hope that Python community members and like-minded organisations will also support the work of The Carpentries in some way.
The support the Python community has shown to PSF for its decision has given us hope in the sustainability of open science communities. Please consider extending your generosity to our organisation’s fundraising efforts, and help us to reach more individuals that are aligned to our mission and values: https://carpentries.org/support/
We are grateful to the individuals and organisations who provide financial support to The Carpentries. If you are interested in supporting our work, you can learn more about becoming a Member Organisation, sponsor, or donor. Your contributions help us create positive change in the data and software communities. Just as important as financial contributions is the support that individuals and organisations give to The Carpentries by getting involved in a wide range of activities and volunteer roles.
At the @thecarpentries Community Governance Gathering, @drkariljordan shared that more than 140 people are part of government bodies in the community!
What a number!!
However, considering it is a global community, this demonstrates the significant influence members have on community matters.
Proud member of this community.
Our community includes individuals from many countries, languages, and backgrounds. Together, we are building Glosario, a free and open glossary of computing and data science terms in many languages. Say hi to our Glosario contributors!
At The Carpentries, every contribution matters. Our community includes individuals from many countries, languages, and backgrounds. Together, we are building Glosario, a free and open glossary of computing and data science terms in many languages. By the end of 2024, Glosario included translations in more than 26 languages. This would not be possible without the hard work and time shared by our global contributors. As Glosario grows, we want to make it easier for more people to join in, and ensure everyone’s work is recognised and appreciated.
