A slightly unusual #RailwaysExplained thread today...

HOW IT WORKS - OVERHEAD LINE TEST TRAINS (SLIGHT RETURN)

A while back I did a thread on OLE test trains which you can read here: https://mas.to/@25kV/110895234449246235 More recently, SPL have put together a further iteration of the FrankenTrain™ to test the next stage of Midland Mainline Electrification (MMLE), & today they kindly invited me and a colleague on board to observe high speed testing of the new OLE between Wigston and Kettering North Junction.

HOW IT WORKS - TEST TRAINS (with some indulgent personal experience) Back in 2019 a colleague posted this video. This innocent post started me on an odyssey which ultimately ended with me blagging my way into the cab of said train. Want to know more? Read on #railways #OLE #OCS #OverheadLine

The UK has no dedicated OLE test train - this is the closest thing to it. Before someone mentions MENTOR, that is a very old vehicle and is limited to 100mph. SPL have put the train together in close cooperation with COLAS, UK Rail Leasing (UKRL), Serco and a number of other parties. The amount of coordination to deliver a weird train like this is huge - the 91 had to be modified to take an HS-X pantograph and to allow the mark 3 vehicles either side of it to talk to each other.

So we are in a vicious circle of electrification costing more due to stop-start funding, and policy-makers refusing to smooth the funding due to… high costs.

And that is why the FrankenTrain™ is both brilliant, and awful.

As always, you can find out more about train testing by downloading my book from https://ocs4rail.com/downloads. Sections 21 refers.

#Amazon has started creating auto-generated #AI reviews. The review for my @scarfolk book says that it's "full of fun, fascinating articles for children".

Would that be the book that I designed around cult brainwashing techniques and contains images of dead & disfigured kids?

Why does any of this matter? Because three phase supplies have 3 conductors*, and it isn't practical to provide 2 contact wires at different voltages. That didn't stop a few renegades trying it though: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Three-phase_AC_railway_electrification

The railway takes its traction supply from the national grid or regional company as single phase. We do that by taking a feed from any two of the three grid phases - just like the single phase domestic supply in your house.

*ok sometimes 4, but let's not go there

HOW IT WORKS - NEUTRAL SECTIONS

Back in 2020 @driverbod125 asked: "I was hurtling along in my 125mph diesel train earlier & started thinking about Neutral Sections...

When designing OLE do you take into account locations of signals? I mean you wouldn’t want a train stopped in a section unable to draw any juice?"

So lets answer that!

A few thoughts for people who are new due to #twitterdown #riptwitter

Currently mastodon feels like early Twitter: growing fast, rough edges, evolving norms, not everyone is here yet.

Don't instantly give up because it's different. Give it time.

Your follow(ing/er) count is not a scoreboard.

Chances are you've gone from a fire hose to a trickle, but is that actually bad? You don't have to frantically recreate your old feed. Maybe just slowly add content that makes you happy.

Fedi tip: nobody knows how mastodon works. Ive been on here since 2018 and i have my own instance and i still have absolutely no idea why some avatars dont load or i only see some of the replies in a thread or why gifs sometimes work and sometimes they dont. Just embrace the mystery
