Genau mein Humor.

5.5 tonnes per hour is the amount of methane emitted by a single oil and gas site in the United States — equivalent to running about a million SUVs — according to an analysis that names and shames the worst methane leakers in the world.

The super-polluting plumes from oil and gas facilities have a colossal heating impact on the climate but often result from poor maintenance and can be simple to fix.

It is "maddening" that such easy action to fight the climate crisis is not being taken. People should be angry.

Stopping the leaks can even be free, given that captured gas can be sold – methane is the "natural gas" that fires power stations.

Revealed: the world’s worst mega-leaks of methane driving global heating

Exclusive: Fixing a leak can be simple and equivalent to closing a coal power station, making lack of action maddening, say analysts

Excellent article, by Blain Smith (@blainsmith), on the need for a broader education, especially for computer programmers:

Thanks to Sacha Chua (@sacha) for including this in her most recent weekly Emacs news post.

Edit: proper links for people mentioned.

Humanities in the Machine - Blain Smith

@sacha @blainsmith Good example indeed.

I'm retired now but all during my research and teaching career, I found that the best programmers were those that had a broader background than just programming and also mathematicians (as maths is really philosophy 😉).

@ericsfraga @blainsmith I immediately thought of Protesilaos Stavrou as a current example of a philosopher-geek in Emacs, and of the way we have so many writers and teachers and monks and mountain guides and other people of non-CS backgrounds. :)

Watched that Louis Theroux manosphere documentary where that dude was like "what did women ever do to build the modern world?"

Well, for a start: the broad concept of computer programming, the first compiler, radio frequency hopping, numerous programming languages, the pertussis vaccine, chemotherapy, gas-powered central heating, and the use of the electric guitar for rock'n'roll.

God knows how to weigh those achievements up against hosting podcasts and wearing ill-fitting suits.

@aral if I want to see an 80 year old man make a fool out of himself I'd go to a village fete

instead we're watching the bizarre mental breakdown of a guy who speaks for 342 million people and may very possibly kill us all out of spite
