This. Is. FASCINATING: “The vaccine, which contains dead versions of the bacterium Paenibacillus larvae, comes in the form of food. The vaccine is incorporated into royal jelly, a sugar feed given to queen bees. Once they ingest it, the vaccine is then deposited in their ovaries, giving developing larvae immunity as they hatch.” https://www.nytimes.com/2023/01/07/science/honeybee-vaccine.html?smid=nytcore-ios-share&referringSource=articleShare

US National Science Foundation looks to shake up funding with ‘Golden Ticket’ pilot

The US National Science Foundation (NSF) is looking to give its review panel members a ‘Golden Ticket’ to fund proposals they think have great potential, even if this goes over the heads of other panellists and programme officers. NSF hopes the pilot could help shake up how it distributes its $8.8 billion annual budget, preventing a “regression to the mean” in consensus-based funding decisions that risk rewarding only the least divisive proposals, not those with most potential.

Using the energy of light to charge mitochondria increases healthy lifespan! Happy to have this published in @[email protected] https://www.nature.com/articles/s43587-022-00340-7 #mitochondria #aging #metabolism #optogenetics

Optogenetic rejuvenation of mitochondrial membrane potential extends C. elegans lifespan | Nature Aging

Mitochondrial dysfunction plays a central role in aging but the exact biological causes are still being determined. Here, we show that optogenetically increasing mitochondrial membrane potential during adulthood using a light-activated proton pump improves age-associated phenotypes and extends lifespan in Caenorhabditis elegans. Our findings provide direct causal evidence that rescuing the age-related decline in mitochondrial membrane potential is sufficient to slow the rate of aging and extend healthspan and lifespan. Using light to optogenetically power mitochondria, this study shows that opposing the age-related decline in mitochondrial membrane potential leads to increased healthspan and lifespan in Caenorhabditis elegans. This result points to mitochondrial charge as a fundamental regulator of biological aging.

I love closing out the year with this. 😊
