Scientist turned software engineer. Variously Java, Scala and Python over the years, some Big Data on Spark, some social media analysis, hype-busting tech writing, and a bunch of other stuff, now mostly trying to cram things reluctantly into k8s pods. Debunker of transphobes.

Field archery (trad. recurve).

Kung-fu (Shaolin 7 animals).

The trend in 2026 will be for software developers using "AI" coding assistants to become more and more reliant on them as their own ability to comprehend and reason about programs atrophies.

This is make them less able to spot problems in the output, of which we *know* there'll still be many. That problem isn't going away.

The deterioration of software reliability will accelerate as models are trained on more and more of the "slop".

It's a doom loop.

I have released three new limited edition prints. This is one of them. They are all available now: www.tomgauld.com/shop

So you're out #sailing in a new area and your electrics fail. No bother, just go back to using a paper chart for navigation (if you ever stopped: I didn't).

The only problem is that the United Kingdom Hydrographic Office is withdrawing its portfolio of Admiralty Standard Nautical Charts and Thematic Charts.

Thank Bob we still have Imray ... for now.

I'm also wondering what small or traditional boat sailors without electronics are meant to do.

We've handed over the rescue bunnies to their new home. A very emotional time for me - in fact I was worried sick - but have been able to visit them now and they seem to be doing fine!

Giving the wild rescue bunnies some outdoors experience before moving on to their new home & eventual release!

Bit of a scare today as Big Bun escaped from the run and was only found (by a stroke of luck) after dark (having travelled all the way up the garden, round the house & into the other garden) 😰
