How do I put these 5.25” floppy disks to work? I feel like I need some kind of computer from the 80s. But which one?
Boost for reach, please.
We just got back from a jaunt through the halls of RMRRF 2026!
The Floppy-RAID is complete!
It gets a whopping ~250kBps write speeds, but only on extremely large files forcing all mirror pools to be written to simultaneously. Small files have much slower write speeds it seems.
I’m not sure how the striping algorithm normally works, but it seems like macOS’s software RAID just stacks the underlying logical disks sequentially. It’s not doing block-level striping.
Pen reloading day!
Here’s a nice audio recording of the RAID array being written to.
I hope you like sled-seek sounds!
I’ve obtained 9x total Sony 2x FDDs and just need one more to complete the RAID array. I wanted to determine if the stripe could handle more than two mirror sets for the RAID10 volume.
The answer is yes, but I had to use ExFAT from the macOS Diskutil tool as the FAT12 format would NOT let me stripe more than two mirror sets.
We had a kestrel visit us yesterday for just a moment. I’d like to see them more frequently, what a pretty bird!
I brought up the highlights and saturation a bit as the original photo was very dull compared to the colors I could see with my own eyes.
