We just released Bonfire Social 1.0.3 🔥 with dozens of bug fixes and UX improvements, plus:

  • Federated comments embeddable on any web page.
  • Deep Ghost integration: SSO, membership tier sync, and automatic article import.
  • New dashboard widgets: spotlight, polls closing soon, top discussions.
  • #CalmEmpowerment: a new design pattern that starts with a few sensible defaults, offers a middle layer of common adjustments, and reveals the full options only when you need them. Boundaries and post permissions got this treatment first, more to follow...
  • Modular community rules: a first step in bringing research and co-design with students and researchers at @[email protected] into Bonfire, so governance becomes something communities can better define and share, and that others can fork and adapt.

I updated my post about moving from Substack to Ghost to include my battle with Mailgun, and switching to AWS SES. Had to install a proxy that didn't have the best documentation, so I made my own.

Still waiting on AWS to give me production access so logins and subscriptions are still broken, but hoping to get them up this week.

Moving from Substack to Ghost

Getting Ghost up and running was pretty easy, minus a couple problems that made me want to rip my hair out. This is mostly if you want to spin up Ghost on DigitalOcean using their 1-Click app in the DO marketplace, or if you're having problems yourself with this combo.

While I have no ill will toward the “ATmosphere” (Bluesky/AT Protocol), the contrast in funding models is hard to ignore. The fediverse's support from strategic investments in open infrastructure (like NLnet or STF) feels far healthier than ATmosphere's heavy backing from crypto-linked VCs—a sector often fraught with bubbles and social harm. I'm a bit envious of their smooth R&D resources, but I'm ultimately convinced that building on a foundation of digital public goods is the more sustainable path for a truly decentralized web.

Researchers found genes that may predate all life on Earth. That is like discovering DLC that shipped before the base game. Yes the universe has prequels too: https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2026/02/260210082913.htm #scifi #STEM #worldbuilding
Scientists find genes that existed before all life on Earth

Life’s story may stretch further back than scientists once thought. Some genes found in nearly every organism today were already duplicated before all life shared a common ancestor. By tracking these rare genes, researchers can investigate how early cells worked and what features of life emerged first. New computational tools are now helping scientists unlock this hidden chapter of evolution.
