Maria van Nispen (1666-1730) was cipierster van het Gravensteen in Leiden van 1699 tot 1727. Ik (Susan) onderzoek in mijn vrije tijd haar leven.

From Le Guin's "Earthsea" through to Novik's "Scholomance Trilogy".
Regendans💯 eens over vieze ramen in de treinen. Ja, ik zie het niet zo bij de regionale vervoerders maar de NS is vreselijk wat dat betreft. Ik kijk erg graag naar buiten als ik in een trein zit maar de NS lijkt de aanname te hebben gedaan dat omdat "iedereen" toch op hun slimme telefoon zit dat schoonmaken van ruiten niet meer hoeft. De "NS mist", stillevens van landschappen in dichte mist, gratis en goedkoop voor u geschilderd. 🙄

Vieze trein
Met schaamte lees ik dat schoonmakers van treinen te weinig tijd krijgen en een slecht salaris, waardoor nieuwkomers ook al snel weer afhaken (Trouw, 20 maart). Dat de NS soms minder schoonmakers inplant ‘omdat het werk tegenwoordig efficiënter wordt gedaan en er minder taken zijn’. Ammehoela, toen ik ooit lesgaf kreeg de schoonmaker van de school maar zes minuten per klas. Afgelopen maand maakte ik twee keer een treinreis van meerdere uren, waarbij de ramen zo vies waren dat je niet naar buiten kon kijken. Om over de wc maar niet te spreken. Wat is dat toch dat we schoonmaak niet als waardevol zien? En er dus niet een goed salaris aan koppelen en er niet genoeg uren voor inplannen om iets goed schoon te krijgen. Het is tijd voor een massale herwaardering van dit beroep.

There's a widespread myth that medieval people used spices to cover up the taste of rotten meat.
The whole story traces back to one book. In 1939, a scientist named J.C. Drummond published The Englishman's Food and suggested that medieval recipes were so heavily spiced because the meat was frequently tainted. No evidence. Just an assumption. One sentence in one book published 85 years ago.
