The Devil Wears Prada 2

Directed by David Frankel; starring Anne Hathaway, Meryl Streep, Stanley Tucci; written by Aline Brosh McKenna (1h59m)

As Runway struggles, Andy returns to save the fashion magazine.

Spectacular performances but the film, only made for commercial reasons, lazily resets its protagonists to zero so the movie can revisit the bits audiences loved the first time around, hence a movie with little stakes or heart.

Hokum

Written and directed by Damian Mc Carthy; starring Adam Scott, Peter Coonan, David Wilmot, Michael Patric, Florence Ordesh (1h47m)

A troubled American writer travels to a remote hotel in Ireland to scatter his parent’s ashes.

The film runs all the gamut of horror techniques to scare its audience, at times to excess.
But the setup is original, the development clever and the production skillful, resulting in a movie that will satisfy horror fans.

Lee Cronin’s The Mummy

Written and directed by Lee Cronin; starring Jack Reynor, Laia Costa, Natalie Grace, May Calamawy (2h14m)

Eight years after she’s abducted in Cairo, the daughter of an American couple is found in extraordinary circumstances.

Sometimes cliché, often over-directed, but the film leans uncompromisingly in its very visceral horror and reinvents the mummy in clever ways with an original narrative.

Michael

Directed by Antoine Fuqua; starring Jaafar Jackson, Colman Domingo, Miles Teller; written by John Logan (2h07m)

From humble beginnings to world-famous popstar, the career of Michael Jackson.

The cast is picked, the production authentic, Fuqua’s direction is unimpressive.
None of which matters because this is just a shameless commercial meant to whitewash a disgraced entertainer and keep selling you more Michael Jackson.

Dead Man’s Wire

Directed by Gus Van Sant; starring Bill Skarsgård, Dacre Montgomery, Colman Domingo; written by Austin Kolodney (1h44m)

Believing he’s being scammed by a mortgage company, a man takes its VP hostage.

Gus Van Sant’s indy style gives the film a nice documentary feel and the strong performances keep the audience engaged.
But the film feels fragmented trying to tell its story through too many angles while focusing on none of them.

Good Luck, Have Fun, Don’t Die

Directed by Gore Verbinski; starring Sam Rockwell, Haley Lu Richardson, Juno Temple; written by Matthew Robinson (2h14m)

A time traveller selects patrons from a diner to go on a quest to save mankind.

Fresh and clever take on a classic sci-fi trope. Topical as it leans into its satire of social media and AI trends.
Verbinski’s skills do wonders with a humble budget and Rockwell is his usual fantastic self.
