The Christophers

Directed by Steven Soderbergh; starring Michaela Coel, Ian McKellen; written by Ed Solomon (1h40m)

The children of an aging and disgraced painter hire a failed artist to complete their father’s unfinished works so they can inherit a fortune.

A more dynamic direction could have done wonders but there’s a really well-crafted story there with plenty of heart, clever twists and award-winning levels of acting.

Toy Story 5

Directed by Andrew Stanton; starring Joan Cusack, Scarlett Spears, Greta Lee, Conan O’Brien, Tim Allen, Tom Hanks; written by McKenna Harris, Andrew Stanton (1h42m)

The toys must contend with a new electronic device that captures their kid’s attention.

Not be as original, funny or moving as its first installments, the franchise can still do those things in good amount and, paired to a very topical concept, delivers another solid film.

Scary Movie

Directed by Michael Tiddes; starring Olivia Rose Keegan, Cameron Scott Roberts, Savannah Lee Nassif, Anna Faris, Regina Hall, Marlon Wayans, Dave Sheridan; written by Rick Alvarez, Craig, Keenen Ivory, Marlon and Shawn Wayans (1h36)

Ghostface returns to kill again and several movies get spoofed in passing.

The formula hasn't much changed, the concept is enjoyingly meta but while some jokes land, the overall effect feels quite lazy.

Masters of the Universe

Directed by Travis Knight; starring Nicholas Galitzine, Camila Mendes, Idris Elba (2h20)

Exiled to Earth, a young prince must recover his lost magic sword to save his world from tyranny.

The film strikes a nice balance between action and comedy while remaining true to the look and vibe of the source material. Nothing brilliant but this is probably the best a "Masters of the Universe" movie could ever hope to be.

Disclosure Day

Directed by Steven Spielberg; starring Emily Blunt, Josh O'Connor, Colin Firth, Colman Domingo; written by David Koepp, Steven Spielberg (2h25)

An IT security expert steals evidence proving the existence of aliens on Earth.

Spielberg's updated take on his own classic sci-fi movies. Solid in all aspects if not particularly original with a very emotional and humanistic core, delivering that quintessential Spielberg tone.

Tuner

Directed by Daniel Roher; starring Leo Woodall, Havana Rose Liu, Lior Ray, Dustin Hoffman; written by Robert Ramsey, Daniel Roher (1h49m)

To make ends meet, a piano tuner cracks safes for a shady crew.

Clever, well-structured script that balances its drama and thrills particularly well.
Sharp direction, nuanced cast. The sound design lives up to the very aural nature of the story and the film as a whole is impressive in its execution.

Passenger

Directed by André Øvredal; starring Lou Llobell, Jacob Scipio; written by T.W. Burgess, Zachary Donohue (1h34m)

A couple who have decided to live their lives on the road in a camping van are pursued by an ancient demon.

Good concept, less convincing execution that doesn’t have that much plot.
But a couple of sequences that stand out for their direction's ingenuity and the quality acting add up to decent ( but not much more) horror fare.
