I'm going to be moving this account to [email protected] as soon as the protocols settle down and let me do it... I'm running my own server to have greater control over my presence here, and will also use it to study the platform. I'll be inviting a few people to join me there, but it's not quite ready yet. Stay tuned...

"Ever since Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla and SpaceX, plunged the world into an endless stream of speculation and condemnation around his purchase of Twitter, the biggest unanswered question has been: why?"

‘Musk’s Twitter Buy Makes No Sense – Unless It’s Part of Something Bigger’

Brexit and Trump were initially seen as jokes, but the new owner of the social media giant could pose a serious threat to democracy – and a boon for Vladimir Putin, writes David Troy

Byline Times
When it came time to reckon with social media’s failings, nobody ran to the “web3” platforms. Nobody asked “can I get paid per message”? Nobody asked about the blockchain. The community of people who’ve been quietly doing this work for years (decades!) ended up being the ones who welcomed everyone over, as always.

So, what happened was that one of the web servers (host 2) was struggling and I decided to upgrade it like I did yesterday for (host 1): https://mastodon.social/@mastohost/109292313550726464

Yesterday it was really smooth and the upgrade to the cloud instance only caused 90 seconds of downtime.

Today, everything went wrong:
- the network interface for the private IP changed
- when changing the configuration to the new network interface and doing a network restart, it just stopped responding

Seems like Mastodon may be creaking under new load. Stuff is not loading, slowing down. Wonder when the “fail elephant” will be making its first appearances… 🐘
This all seems like Fantasyland Funtime right now because literally no one is here and no one cares. Same as the early days of the internet. Within weeks we could be looking at the same arrival of “everyone” that roils communities, cycle after cycle. Unlikely to end well, because it almost never does.
When does the first Mastodon-inspired mass shooting occur, why wouldn’t that happen, and whose fault will it be?
If the effect of Musk’s purchase of Twitter (with Dorsey’s approval) is to herd people en masse to Mastodon (which seems increasingly possible), then we need to start asking who specifically benefits from the decentralization and shattering of the social landscape. Answers may not be obvious.
Hey so I’m back. Picking up where we left off in 2016…
“If democracy-minded people don’t seize control of the information environment, powerful sociopathic autocrats will do so instead.”

No, Elon and Jack are not “competitors.” They’re collaborating.

Wherein I attempt to clarify a number of ridiculous and false narratives currently taking hold about Musk and Dorsey’s “rivalry.”
