Credit card delinquencies are reaching Great Recession levels

American consumers are falling behind on their credit cards at levels not seen since the Great Recession era.

Roughly 13% of the nation’s credit card balance was at least 90 days delinquent in the first quarter of 2026, according to a report from the Federal Reserve Bank of New York.

It's not just inflation. Wages are falling behind too : NPR

New research from the Brookings Institution released Wednesday describes affordability by comparing the rising costs of essentials against family incomes. By that measure, the report found, in 2024 45.5% of U.S. households did not earn enough to cover their necessities.

The report concluded that a mere $1,000 hike in the annual cost of living would leave another 3 million households unable to make ends meet.
