The Dalrymple Report: AI everything

Hint on what I’m reading…

"Shares in Allbirds surge after maker of wool sneakers announces pivot to AI"

Allbirds made sneakers. They went from about $4B valuation to < $100m.

Sold their sneaker biz, pivoted to AI, shares up more than 500%.

Feels like we've lost the thread. Build it, slap an AI label on it, investors will buy it.

Shares in Allbirds surge after maker of wool sneakers announces pivot to AI

Rebrand as NewBird AI sent shares up 582% in bizarre and rapid turnaround for firm that had fallen on hard times

Went to the Apple Store yesterday to get some hands on time with the MacBook Neo.

Great machine. 🔥

One thing I did notice was the Neo's thickness. It weighs about the same as the 13" MacBook Air, but it is noticeably chunkier.

Small price to pay. Literally.

@davemark Tried to skip back 10s in a Netflix show last night. Man, it was nearly impossible. Such a terrible experience. From a company that used to be so proud of their tech/UI.

I hope they reverse course and go back to using the native Apple player, which is second-to-none in the STB space.

@davemark I read something about them needing to build a custom player to support ad insertion to meet their specs. If I pay for an ad-free experience I shouldn’t have to saddled with that crappy controller with ad insertion disabled 🤬

Watched a movie on Netflix last night. This was my first chance to see the new Netflix Apple TV interface.

🤬

Truly awful. No matter the reasoning, abandoning the built-in Apple TV player/controls was a terrible decision.

Controlling a show in Apple's player was effortless, intuitive, unconscious. Controlling the Netflix player was a jarring halt, took me right out of the movie.

"John Deere to Pay $99 Million in Monumental Right-to-Repair Settlement"

This feels big. 🛠️🚜

Settlement includes “the digital tools required for the maintenance, diagnosis, and repair” of tractors, combines, and other machinery so 3rd parties can legally repair John Deere equipment without threat of being sued.

Great post on stewardship of the Moon.

We’ve left garbage/waste behind and previous visits to the Moon. Now that we’re heading back up there, perhaps on a more permanent basis, we should think about stewardship, as opposed to exploitation.

The Moon belongs to all of us — not just countries that can afford to reach it

As humanity blasts off into a new space race, we need a model of exploration that emphasizes stewardship of other worlds, not exploitation.
