I used to hike past this dead tree when it was still standing. It had several gray Tinder Conks [Fomes fomentarius] growing out of it.
After the tree fell, fresh tan mushrooms, grew in at a different angle from their predecessors. The fungus adapted to the change of posture.
So if a tree falls and thereās no one around to hear it, well⦠at least you might be able to tell WHEN it fell. š¤

A tangle of trees, roots, rocks, and soil.
With the poison ivy leaves out of the way, I was able to get back to the Varnish Shelf mushrooms to log a final photo of this yearās life cycle.
