First known as Octopuss, the Octocat caught the eyes of Github's founders also on iStockphoto, and the rights to it were privately obtained from Oxley. Its popularity has flowered into variety of characteristics found on Octodex.

Larry the Bird, named by Twitter co-founder Biz Stone, was originally Oxley's illustration on iStockphoto that was re-designed for intellectual property purpose. Failbot was later drawn by Oxley.

Creator of the first logos for Twitter and GitHub, Simon John Oxley passed away on the 4th of April, as shared by Dexerto. He also designed Sammy the Shark for DigitalOcean, Chauncey McPufferson the pufferfish for Bitly, and a logo for iStockphoto.
