@dBu_fs on twitter is me.

In #astrophotography we tend to share only our best shots, which can be demotivating for newcomers. So here's one of my early #photo fails, from back when I was a teen.

I went out to shoot a meteor shower with my #film camera. When the pics came back from the lab a few days later, I was gutted to see they were all red! The light from an LED had leaked onto the film. But I learned from that mistake and taped that LED.

Do you have any similar fails to share?

I was at a meeting in the #IUGG23 conference this year where a few participants expressed scepticism that the #OzoneHole was in fact healing. Sadly looks like they were right, at least this year...

Good piece on it from @esa

Ozone hole goes large again

Measurements from the Copernicus Sentinel-5P satellite show that this year’s ozone hole over Antarctica is one of the biggest on record. The hole, which is what scientists call an ‘ozone depleting area,’ reached a size of 26 million sq km on 16 September 2023. This is roughly three times the size of Brazil.

By 1920, the network of interurbans in the US was so dense that a determined commuter could hop interlinked streetcars from Waterville, Maine, to Sheboygan, Wisconsin—a journey of 1,000 miles—exclusively by electric trolley.

i put together a long hopefully helpful curation of alternative game engines. there are so many, some deserve a lot more attention, all with their own strengths and benefits.

Some journals get it! "Large Language Models (LLMs), such as ChatGPT, do not currently satisfy our authorship criteria. In the run-up to Refugee Week, Stella Perrott reflects on the theme of compassion, how it is diminishing, and why we must rekindle it. What has happened in the last eight years to so radically shrink our compassion as a nation?

How does one end up doing #ScienceCommunication full-time? There is certainly more than one way, and each of them comes with a unique story. I'm thrilled @fMRI_guy agreed to tell us his story next Tuesday in the science communication interest group of Wageningen University and Research.

Mark your calendars for the 25th of April and drop me a message with your email address if you want to join the event as a non-WUR participant✌️

Hi all, my "What Makes a Good Theory? Interdisciplinary Perspectives" Lorentz workshop, keynote (https://youtube.com/watch?v=67X0TpnQeO0) paper is finally out — with shamelessly stolen title ‼️

What makes a good theory, and how do we make a theory good? http://psyarxiv.com/8fxds
