"Be kind" is not a complete thought. Be kind to who? And don't say "Be kind to everyone!🤗" Because it's not possible to be kind to everyone.

Mr. Rogers is often held up as the example of someone that was kind to everyone. But even he roasted racists! He was unsympathetic to bigots who wanted to hold on to America's tradition of segregation. Something, something, paradox of tolerance.

"Be kind" is often the coward's way out of speaking up for those that need defending.

@aral Aral, I love this project. Let me know when/if you need people to run and test it out. I have been told I am a great bug-finder ;)
@CynthesisToday @[email protected] "Science and Technology Studies." It's the academic field for the study of scientists, engineers, and ther relationship between technology and society or science and society, etc. A specialist form of inquiry that brings together history, philosophy, sociology, anthropology, and communication.
@[email protected] I think it depends on whether you are attracting a scholar to sts or someone outside the field and/or academia. Some of the classic pieces I use invoke the whole, wow I never thought of it that way response. Emily Martin’s egg and sperm, parts of Latour on sociology of mundane artifacts, Star on infrastructure…
@bkeegan LOL! just hand me the mic. I do have a lot to say about this.
(Also shout out to Tiffany Nichols on LIGO, and of course Harry Collins on gravitational wave detection).

Evidence of the surveillance of environmental activists keeps mounting, so we put together a guide on how to limit social media monitoring for those protecting our planet 🌎

@fcktheworld587 you are right, it is a rhetorical statement. (Edit: but I felt it was relevant because only now are most people waking up to this fact, and this is a drum I’ve been beating for ten years….)

I would like you to imagine
That every “service” and app you’ve been using on the internet
Every platform for “information” and “community”
Every “futuristic” device that made you feel “connected”
Was just there to collect
Your data
All along

Collate it, analyze it,
Segment and sell it
Carve you into a market segment
Deepening divides
Corner your biometrics
To train facial recognition
Colonize your habits and home
To develop an “AI” product

To sell to investors
And increase shareholder value

I am absolutely gobsmacked by the journalistic achievement that @mozilla pulled off with their mental health, prayer, and lifestyle app audit.

Highly worth a read if you are like me and live in the orbit of these trendy app-based therapy services.

Top Mental Health & Prayer Apps Fail at Privacy, Security

Despite dealing with issues like depression, suicide, domestic violence, and PTSD, these apps share data freely and raise many security concerns
