#Writing #Illustration
The first chapter of the first book of the series that I've been working on has been sold to Amazing Stories as a short story and published in November. But the AI illustration the publisher slapped on it was… inadequate. So, I have commissioned an artist to do a better one, at my own expense. The publisher is ok with that.
Here's Before and After. The story is now updated:

Do you draw out maps/floorplans/diagrams/etc for key set pieces in your writing?
Yes. For important locations on Venus, I have perused a lot of radar maps to select the ones that are exactly right. No handwaving on this.
Here's the map of an important race in LASSes (Low Atmosphere and Surface Submersibles). Does it look like a skull? That's not the only thing interesting about it. :)
#WordWeavers 9/23: What is your favourite drink while writing?
Квас (kvas).
#WordWeavers 9/13: What animal would you like as a muse and why?
I already have a few (four cats, to be precise). One image is worth many words. (The screens are blurred, of course.)
But my middle daughter would have chosen hyena. She loves hyenas so much she even drinks from a mug that says, "Half Human / Half Hyena."

Also relevant is the map of the Freshman Race that the characters compete in--about 1,200 miles long, across the terrain that melts some metals and where the air is 1/10 the density of water--in LASSes (Low Atmosphere and Surface Submersibles).
This is an action portion of the radar map of Venus, whose features resemble a skull. The bright areas are easier to hide in.

I'm no artist, and finding appropriate images in the public domain is a challenge, due to the far-future nature of my fiction. The only mood board I came up with, with some friends' help, is attached. Pardon me for the steampunkish feel of the wings, but that was the only winged human I could find that even remotely fit. Brain damage imagery is also hard to come across.

Besides the map from yesterday, I only have a moodboard. I'm not an artist, so I combined whatever fragments matched even remotely. The wearable wings, for example, shouldn't look quite this steampunkish but rather sleek and modern. Anyway, that's what I have for the Hornets' Nest. At least, the sky is vaguely greenish, though not quite the right shade. But the smack-in-the-face attitude is right.
