Empowering Gulf Coast Communities Through Educational Excursions and Outreach

Galveston’s cooler season brings migratory wildlife, including White Pelicans. Warming winters allow Black Mangroves to expand, raising questions about their impact on native marsh plants and the local ecosystem. Leading research scientists, Dr. Anna Armitage, notes mixed mangrove-marsh habitats can strengthen coastal ecosystems. So what do you think? Are black mangroves a welcome addition, or do they pose challenges for local species and marsh communities?

The Port of Galveston celebrates 200 years this week! Long before bridges and boats connected the island to the mainland, two Indigenous tribes—the Karankawa and the Akokisa—called this region home. Adapting to geographic isolation; they fished, hunted, and foraged across Galveston Island and its coastal estuaries. Local wildlife also adapted—did you know there are two distinct ecotypes of Bottlenose dolphins? For centuries, our coast has been a hub for fisheries, recreation, shipping, and more!
🌕 You know the moon is full when it rises at the same time that the sun sets. The Harvest Moon — the first full moon after the Fall equinox — lit up the Gulf with a golden glow this week. Its powerful pull stirs tides and brings marine life closer to shore, drawing local shrimpers in. It sets the stage for the Harvest Moon Regatta, one of the largest sailboat races on the Gulf Coast! ⛵️ Racers set sail from Galveston today and are heading to Port Aransas. Grab chair and a spot along the coast!

As kids head back to school, the sky and sea are full of lessons.
The Perseids lit up our nights, brown shrimp are returning to Gulf estuaries, and soon the Flower Garden Banks will bloom with a mass coral spawning—nature’s own classroom in session. Here’s to a year of curiosity and wonder!

☎️️ Ring ring! The ocean called. It wants its biodiversity back

World leaders are having a nice time in Nice, where they’re supposed to be ratifying a treaty that would protect our oceans.

We’re asking them to answer the call, and meet the deadline they set themselves. We need at least 60 countries to make the treaty law to make it legally binding.

If you want to help, sign the petition to call on governments to seas the moment and create ocean sanctuaries.
