25 years as Apple Worldwide Developer Relations exec. Retired in 2021 to indulge my passions of retro computing, classic Porsches and Lego. What more could you want?
Time to finally play with my Christmas present. It only took 5 weeks Christmas summer holidays and a rainy day in Sydney to finally get to it. I am a massive #lego fan and a massive #startrek TNG fan. This one should be simple. However at 3600 pieces, 60cm long and weighing 5.6KG this could be interesting.
Does anyone know what the newest mac is that can use #globaltalk ? I currently have four zones at two locations (Vintage Computer Garage, Vintage Computer Garage LT and VCG, VCG LT). Both are currently run on LC475 logicboards. I want to repurpose the these logicboards. I have a heap of PM6100's and am thinking about swapping them in place of the LC475’s. Is there a definitive “Maximum" OS and hardware that AIR 3.0 needs?
I guess this is what you do when you have a few spare Mac Pro cases and some glass.

My final project for #MARCHintosh 2025. Sitting on the couch downloading an app to my #Newton #eMate over wifi from my workshop server that is 5 miles away on a different zone on #globaltalk.

Seems simple by today’s standards but that took a lot of retro tech to make it happen.

2x LC475 (AIR routers)
1x Original Airport Basestation
1x clamshell iBook to setup BS
1x rebuilt eMate battery plus eMate hinge repair
1x PCMCIA wifi card that would support #appletalk

That is a Mic drop for me.

Cool little admin tool for #globaltalk. The only issue is that you need an #eMate or #Newton 2x00, a wifi card that can handle AppleTalk, and original Apple Airport Basestation connected to your existing GlobalTalk node. It did a good job of finding @europlus Laser printers. Thanks to @splorp for pointing me to this little gem.
Success! An emate on #globaltalk wirelessly for #MARCHintosh 2025. It required a brain wipe of the eMate and a fresh install of all drivers but the eMate can now connect via AppleTalk to GlobalTalk and to the internet via TCP/IP with no wires.
More #MARCHintosh success with getting my eMate onto #GlobalTalk via EtherTalk. It required a Farallon Etherwave PCMCIA card. Specifically the one with the blue arrow not the red arrow. Both have the same part number. The nice thing about this card it actually asks you if you want to enable AppleTalk when inserted. Still no luck getting it to be visible on #talkcrawler
More #MARCHintosh fun with another Apple OS (GS/OS System 6.01) joining #globaltalk. This one was a challenge as the IIGS has a Transwarp GS accelerator in it running at 16MHz rather than the IIGS’s native 2.4MHz. It didn’t want to play nicely with AppleTalk. I had to disable acceleration of the serial ports. Thankfully the genius’ at Applied Engineering back in the day provided software to do this.
My latest #globaltalk connected devices for #MARCHintosh. An SE/30 running System 7.1, a PowerBook G3 running Mac OS 9.1, a PowerBook G4 running Mac OS X 10.4.11 and a #newton eMate running Newton OS 2.0. All can see all zones and can download files. Next up will be a bit trickier - an Apple IIGS (which I have connected to GlobalTalk before) and an Apple IIe with an Apple Workstation card.
First completed project for #MARCHintosh 2025, a permanent home for my #globaltalk Apple Internet Router node. It is a very basic setup but highly stable. It is an LC475 logic board with BlueSCSI v1 running System 7.1 and AIR 3.0. It is cable tied to a nylon chopping board with chipboard feet to keep it steady vertically. It is currently serving as a GlobalTalk node, AppleShare file server and LocalTalk to EtherTalk router serving my “Vintage Computer Garage” zones on GlobalTalk.
