The Boy That Cried Mythos: Verification is Collapsing Trust in Anthropic https://www.flyingpenguin.com/the-boy-that-cried-mythos-verification-is-collapsing-trust-in-anthropic/

Yesterday Cory Doctorow argued that refusal to use LLMs was mere "neoliberal purity culture". I think his argument is a strawman, doesn't align with his own actions and delegitimizes important political actions we need to make in order to build a better cyberphysical world.

EDIT: Diskussions under this are fine, but I do not want this to turn into an ad hominem attack to Cory. Be fucking respectful

Acting ethically in an imperfect world

Life is complicated. Regardless of what your beliefs or politics or ethics are, the way that we set up our society and economy will often force you to act against them: You might not want to fly somewhere but your employer will not accept another mode of transportation, you want to eat vegan but are […]

Is anyone aware of a martial-arts-focused Fediverse server? I searched around and didn't find anything. Any help appreciated!

I may regret this at some point, but I felt the need to put down in writing how I feel about this moment in the tech industry.

It is not kind. You may well be insulted by it. If you are... then you really should question yourself.

A rare interview with the creators of the always-funny, always-brilliant, and *usually*-sexy—or occasionally anti-sexy—OGLAF! Cooper has kept a low profile over the years, but is legitimately one of the very best artists in comics today. Read OGLAF if you're old enough to drive!

Wired, Business Insider Editors Duped By Completely Bogus ā€˜AI’ Using ā€˜Journalist’ Who Made Up Towns, People That Don’t Exist

Here's Wired's mea culpa:

Techdirt's Karl Bode correctly concludes: "This country has taken an absolute hatchet to quality journalism, which in turn has done irreparable harm to any effort to reach reality-based consensus or have an informed electorate. The rushed integration of ā€œAI,ā€ usually by media owners who largely only see it as a way to cut corners and undermine labor, certainly isn’t helping. Add in the twisted financial incentives of an ad-based engagement infotainment economy, and you get exactly the sort of journalistic outcomes academics long predicted."

Wired, Business Insider Editors Duped By Completely Bogus ā€˜AI’ Using ā€˜Journalist’ Who Made Up Towns, People That Don’t Exist

The rushed integration of half-cooked automation into the already broken U.S. journalism industry simply isn’t going very well. There have been just countless examples where affluent media owners r…

I wrote up some thoughts on Careless People (ironically on GoodReads an Amazon company) (I should probably use one of the other ones, right?))

Craig Wright's review of Careless People

5/5: Five stars purely for the marketing, to get people to read this. I have very complicated feelings about this book due to my history with social media. I see two possibilities in terms of the veracity of this tale. Either the events in this book hew relatively closely to reality creating the outcomes we see in the world today, or it is a work of fiction and to explain the outcomes of this company, we still have to work backwards from first principles. If you were to do the latter, how much different would the narrative be from what we see described in this book? I would imagine not enough ...
