Dear all nonprofits and especially tech bros that want me to consult for free, present for free, etc.:
I cannot afford to work for free.
Please pay me for my time and expertise.
All the professional stuff I give away for free is on my web site & on social media.
Anyone out there still care about inclusion? About practices that help provide equitable, meaningful access to opportunities & resources for people who might otherwise be excluded or marginalized?
It feels like not. But if you do, join this subreddit & post resources!

You should always be prepared to justify why a position is volunteer (unpaid) rather than a paid consultant or employee - & the justification should never only be "We can't afford to pay all these people for this work."

Justifying a position as “volunteer” instead of “paid staff”

From February 2001 through much of February 2005, I worked at the United Nations Volunteers (UNV) program, managing the UN’s Online Volunteering service (formerly NetAid) and the United Natio…

Every department head at a nonprofit, & most other staff too, should have this in their job description: "identify tasks & roles for #volunteers in your work & support volunteers engaged by our organization, as appropriate." & be evaluated yearly on this.

Have you used my free grading system to measure the ROI of a volunteer activity at your nonprofit? Let me know! I created it from my own work working with #volunteers (& having to push back against someone wanting to get rid of volunteer involvement).

Measure the ROI of your nonprofit’s volunteer engagement by grading each volunteer activity

The largest-ever DNA sequencing of Viking remains reveals they weren't blonde-haired & blue-eyed & they were surprisingly ethnically diverse.
The more I study history & genealogy, the more I learn that we are mutts. ALL OF US.

Eulogy for the CIA Factbook: The free standard for world facts, long an educational staple, is gone.

Farewell to the CIA World Factbook, a reference manual now gone under Trump

The Trump administration has shut down the CIA World Factbook, and there's much lamenting about the demise of a free source that many people used to check basic facts about countries. The end came on Feb. 4 in a “fond farewell” post from the spy agency. The CIA says the decision reflects an agency whose core mission has changed over the years. Factbook fans say they'll miss the trusted reference point that had its origins in World War II-era intelligence work. It went public in 1975 and became a classroom staple and a soft-power tool. But to critics, the Factbook never really stayed truly neutral.

The weather was PERFECT for a #motorcycle ride from where we live to Astora and back. The road through Clatsop State Forest is such a winding, gorgeous gem - though no elks for viewing this time. Lots of motorcyclists out.
