Now, this isn’t generally the case on mastodon/the fediverse, but the queer history of the fediverse hasn’t stopped racists or norms of whiteness from taking up shop and organizing the space. A queer history didn’t keep racist slurs out of my mentions.

To be clear, I’m not denying the queer history of the fediverse: I’m rejecting its use as a counter-argument against structures of oppression on the fediverse. I’m also rejecting the immediate assumption that queerness = anti-racist.

Solidarity with my UCU comrades in the UK who are going on strike today. The fight against precarious employment in higher education should be (and is) happening everywhere! #ucuRISING
“At one of my schools, as well as those doing private tutoring, I’ve got a teacher who has to dance at the weekend in a Greek restaurant, a teacher working as a farm hand, and one doing shifts in a bar.”

One in 10 UK teachers forced to do second jobs ‘to keep eating’ amid rising costs

Monthly pay does not cover basic outgoings, with many having to drive taxis, clean and do bar work in their spare time

Please, fellow white folks interacting with BIPOC folks. Listen; don't debate, don't give advice or make recommendations to unless it's explicitly asked for.

Our goal should be to learn how we can make things better. Here, on fedi, as well as the real world. That starts with listening.

Headline “The puzzle of UK’s half a million missing workers” - Not such a puzzle - under resourced NHS & Long Covid, both the result of UK Government policy choices. Terrible for people & their families, bad for economy. There Is An Alternative strategy - pay NHS staff & enable people to reduce #Covid transmission.

The puzzle of UK’s half a million missing workers

The number out of work through ill health has been rising sharply - and no-one is really sure why.

This is for white people: The point is not telling a target of #racism to block report and defederate so that they (and you) no longer need to see it and you can stay comfortable. The point is supporting them when they call it out and then YOU end it, or at least make it have consequences, by your own actions and within yourself. When racism is pointed out, don’t make it the observer’s fault. Go after the perp. It’s a white people problem.

Mastodon audiences vs Twitter audiences in a nutshell.

My audience is mostly from the Asian continent (primarily India) on Twitter. On Mastodon, it's dominated by the Western world in comparison.

This is the main reason why I currently don't feel comfortable leaving Twitter entirely - it effectively abandons half of the world's population.

I have some brilliant colleagues, especially our wee #linguistics team. Having spent half my 20 adult years as a #highereducation student, I’d love to be proud of the sector I now work in. But 🚨UK university staff are run into the ground by unfair pay, workload, insecure contracts, slashed pensions & workplace inequality. So here we are👇 #ucuRISING See you on the #picket ✊☔️
I brought my @ucu hat and am striking from Estonia. I'm tired, my pension got stolen for no reason, and too many colleagues are precariously employed. It's so unnecessary. #UCUstrikes #UCURising
