A new project, the Security Research Legal Defense Fund, aims to cover costs of representation for researchers facing legal issues over security research. Sounds like a promising initiative – but I wonder about who gets to define "good faith" (see mission statement below).

We aim to help fund legal representation for persons that face legal issues due to good faith security research and vulnerability disclosure in cases that would advance cybersecurity for the public interest.

I'm struck by the juxtaposition of these headlines on Democracy Now. To my knowledge no mainstream outlet has pointed out that the US gov't (rightly) protests Russia's imprisonment of Gershkovich on espionage charges, while seeking extradition of Assange for the same.
So to be clear this is money that we, the taxpayers of New York, have to pay to be given out to other New Yorkers because the police, which we also pay for, assaulted them.
