How real women dressed over the ages

A lot of fuss and attention is given to how wealthy women dressed in ancient times. Yet for every affluent woman there would be 10 other women of more humble origins, toiling and working in low paid and thankless jobs. Here are some really incredible videos that showcase how these women dressed over time. Women in lower paid vocations have always wanted to look well turned out and polished and spent a great deal of their wages and…

Book Review: The Book of Strange New Things by Michel Faber

Peter and Beatrice Leigh are 30-something British couple who are devoutly evangelical Christians and are living in a Britain of an imagined near future. In this imaginary Britain things look largely similar to how they are right now, except that there's a colony of humans living on a faraway planet called Oasis. These pioneers are eking out a civilisation and trying to engage with local alien life there.

10 Interesting Things I Found on the Internet 181

Blinky Bill: A delightful cultural exchange between Poland and Australia For anyone from outside of Australia, Blinky Bill is a delightful koala character created in the 20th Century who became iconic in this country and much loved by all children. His popularity led to a widespread love of koalas in general and meant that real life koalas were adequately protected from being hunted.

10 Interesting Things I Found on the Internet 180

Enjoy footage of Wilford the extra pudgy, big-pawed California Black bear yawning and dreaming What a treasure Wilford is, just rolling around, farting, urinating, stretching and dreaming about all the things wild bears dream about in California's Angeles National Forest. Footage of him along with the forest ambient sound is incredibly chill and relaxing to watch. Frozen methane bubbles trapped beneath a lake's surface…

Poetry and music from the film ‘Wings of Desire’ (Der Himmel uber Berlin)

One of my favourite films of all time is the Wim Wenders film The Wings of Desire known in German as Der Himmel uber Berlin. It won the Best Film at Cannes in 1987. Some of the magic of this film comes from the music (Nick Cave, U2), the acting (Bruno Ganz, Solveig Dommartin) and also from the poetry (Peter Handke) which is scattered throughout the film.

Thirty great medieval epithets for people and beasts

Why do we say a gaggle of geese, a flock of sheep, a pride of lions or a swarm of bees? Well it harks back to medieval times when sportsmen grouped together collectives of beasties to refer to them…
