Weekend project: complete.
I’ve been wanting to totally overhaul my old iPod for years. Dead hard drive, dead battery, dead headphone jack, knackered case. Now it’s even better than it was when I bought it in 2006.
Personal music players peaked here… it’s just such a good device.
Oh, yeah. There's snow up on those hills today.
(Also, this is the view out of what will eventually be @Greenteeth and I's art studio and darkroom. I feel incredibly lucky.)
Having a slow and leisurely morning in my new kitchen, drinking coffee, eating toast, looking out the window. Within the last hour we've had bright sun, heavy rain, and bursts of surprisingly large snowflakes.
Living on the edge of the Peak District seems to make for unpredictable weather.
For some reason "AI is just like watching Netflix" is back in my feeds so I took that as a sign to update my data tracking for Netflix. The company's energy use rose 1% from 2021 to 2024.
Compare that to:
Google: 71%
Nvidia: 88%
Meta: 96%
Microsoft: 119%
Where are all the multi-gigawatt, tens-of-megatonnes gas-fired data centres being proposed by Netflix? Are governments frantically rushing fast-tracking laws for video streaming?
Today was the first day I’ve had chance to get out for a wander since @Greenteeth and I moved north. I ended up covering about 15k with this fantastic contraption hanging off my shoulder (including the best part of an hour just hanging out next to a hidden little brook deep in a valley).
It’s good to be back in Derbyshire again.
God, this is a good piece of writing: https://www.terrygodier.com/the-last-quiet-thing/ascii
I'm not a Watch Guy, but a few people have commented on the fact that I've worn a watch consistently for the last 20+ years. "Why bother? You have a phone." This article summed it up better than I ever could: my mid-2000s Nixon or my 1980s Casio never distracts me. It asks nothing of me. It just does what it should. I can check the time without seeing twenty other things asking for my attention. It just is.
More quiet things, plz.
