For some reason "AI is just like watching Netflix" is back in my feeds so I took that as a sign to update my data tracking for Netflix. The company's energy use rose 1% from 2021 to 2024.

Compare that to:

Google: 71%
Nvidia: 88%
Meta: 96%
Microsoft: 119%

Where are all the multi-gigawatt, tens-of-megatonnes gas-fired data centres being proposed by Netflix? Are governments frantically rushing fast-tracking laws for video streaming?

Today was the first day I’ve had chance to get out for a wander since @Greenteeth and I moved north. I ended up covering about 15k with this fantastic contraption hanging off my shoulder (including the best part of an hour just hanging out next to a hidden little brook deep in a valley).

It’s good to be back in Derbyshire again.

God, this is a good piece of writing: https://www.terrygodier.com/the-last-quiet-thing/ascii

I'm not a Watch Guy, but a few people have commented on the fact that I've worn a watch consistently for the last 20+ years. "Why bother? You have a phone." This article summed it up better than I ever could: my mid-2000s Nixon or my 1980s Casio never distracts me. It asks nothing of me. It just does what it should. I can check the time without seeing twenty other things asking for my attention. It just is.

More quiet things, plz.

The Last Quiet Thing

Your possessions came alive. Now they won't stop talking.

My partner and I just bought a house - one of the many being sold off by landlords in response to new pro-tenant legislation in the UK.

We moved in on Monday and the amount of knackered stuff and absolute bodge jobs we’re finding is borderline hilarious. For instance, my partner just went to run the bath and the hot tap only produced freezing cold water. Turns out the taps have been plumbed wrong and the “cold tap” is actually the hot one.

There is no such thing as a good landlord.

As age-verification bullshit becomes more common, I am determined to simply not participate in any service or video game that requires it. The day I see the prompt, is the day I leave.

Maybe the government’s hope is that I stop participating in society, but I assure you that I will not. I’ll find or build alternatives, and refuse to comply with bad law.

I hope you will, too.

And as a silver lining, maybe the weird internet we end up creating as a result will suck less than the current one.

I am not sure what I am more tired of: packing or cleaning things that have developed a veneer of mould from being stored in cupboards.

Getting out of this damp shitbox after nine years will be such a relief.

And so it begins.

If I knew how to code/program/set up bots on here, I'd create something that could reply to every single post that mentions JCH Streetpan with a single phrase:

"Rollei Retro 400S is exactly the same stuff and almost half the price - Bellamy Hunt is ripping you off."

I'm currently packing up my home office in preparation for moving house, and I just found this TINY Playstation 1 controller I actually forgot I owned.

It is goddamned gorgeous and a big part of me wants to stop doing this and play some Kula World or something instead.

My mum worked in a local hardware store before I was born. Even when I was a teenager, she was bumping into people she knew from her time there; regular customers who would sometimes pop in for one specific bolt, a couple of sheets of sandpaper, or an assortment of O-rings.

While this is no means a new statement, every so often I am reminded that we have just lost so much as a society.
