Eminent Indian astrophysicist Jayant Narlikar passed away recently. His name sounded familiar, so I digged a little and lo behold he was actually the author of one of my favorite childhood science books "A Journey through the Universe". With superb funny cartoons by Sudhir Dar, this book covered a huge swathe of science and was crucial in stoking my interest in the wonders of this world. This book made me!

The Light Eaters was a delightful book that catches up to the scientific discoveries in recent decades about how plants are able to communicate, feel, listen, remember, interact with animals, mimic and adapt to their kin. Author Zoe Schlanger brings an infectious energy to her writing about the fascinating abilities of plants and the scientists who are pioneering these findings.

Steven Soderbergh's Side Effects is a fantastic and complex thriller. Jude Law, Rooney Mara and Catherine Zeta-Jones are incredible here. Just when you think the movie is about depression, it takes a huge twist into an edge-of-the-seat thriller. This is a gem that plays at multiple levels.

Hope Springs is a romcom around an empty nesting couple who live like roommates. Meryl Streep wants the spark back & persuades Tommy Lee Jones to attend an intense couples therapy together, conducted by Steve Carell. It is fantastic to watch this couple, Meryl with the expressions of a young girl still in love and Jones as a weather-beaten tax accountant. But without their interactions, there is nothing much in this movie.

Malice is yet another un-put-downable Keigo Higashino murder mystery. Not just the "how", but figuring out the "why" of the killer becomes the focus here. Nail-biting from start to finish.

I rarely give a book 5/5, but Lieutenant Hornblower, the 2nd book in the series was near perfect. Great military strategy, nailbiting ups and down, and witness to the growth of an officer into a commander. Indirectly, it is also a great book on the journey to becoming a leader.

Celeste & Jesse Forever is an enjoyable rom-com drama of a goofy young couple's journey of realization that they are not meant for each other, but still the best friends for each other. Rashida Jones is fantastic (also the writer), but Andy Samberg is a bit too goofy for the serious scenes. Los Angeles looks gorgeous and plays the third wheel.

Michael Crichton's Dragon Teeth is an entertaining Wild West quest for dinosaur bones set amidst the war between US Army and Native Americans. Easy quick read, but lacks the depth of his famous books.

Spielberg's Lincoln covers the final weeks of his life with his cabinet and family as he tries to convince the House to pass the 13th amendment to abolish slavery and wrap up the Civil War. Daniel Day-Lewis looks like he was born to play Lincoln. Great immersive movie!

Everybody in the US is so angry these days, Angrynomics delves into the relationship between the economic situation and this public anger. It is a quick read, presented as dialogues between the 2 authors. Though timely, I really felt that the book was lacking in structure, real data and insights.
