Higher education should not just be free but everyone should get financial support while doing it.

Do what you want and get paid to be able to. Doesn't matter if it's STEM or art or humanities.

i think any solarpunk space program would require a grand fundraising to collect funds from people who support the endeavour and woul require stakeholders from various cities in the world. we can maintain and reuse the current launch sites that exist and decomission some of them. we'd look at the effects of rockets on the upper atmosphere where it can do the most damage and think of ways we can ameliorate them. 1/13

finally bought myself a (brother) sewing machine after having used the machines of people i live with

it's really difficult for me, as a shorter, fat person, with wide hips, to find pants that fit me properly. i'm giving up on trying to find a brand and style that fits.

if anyone knows #sewing #patterns for full-length, high-waist pants (either with an elastic band or zipper + buttons), i would love recommendations

or youtube videos that explain how to draft such a pattern, that also works

🌊🪐 Researchers at #MIT identified universal rules for how #waves form on other #planets by analyzing the relationship between wind #energy and planetary conditions.

Their model illustrates that on #moons like #Titan low gravity and dense atmospheres allow waves to start at very low wind speeds and grow taller than they do on #Earth. Conversely lava worlds with high gravity and viscous molten rock would require hurricane-force winds to create even a small ripple.

The Mechanics of Alien Waves

One of the most dramatic and memorable scenes from Interstellar comes from Miller’s planet - and if you don’t want a spoiler for an 11 year old movie, feel free to skip to the next paragraph. When the crew arrives on this potential new home for humanity, they are faced with a literal 1.2 km high wall of water bearing down on them quickly. It’s a great representation of how waves on other planets can act differently than on Earth. Admittedly, according to Kip Thorne, the scientific advisor for that movie, those waves are actually caused by the planet’s proximity to a local black hole rather than the wind that forms our waves here.

Universe Today

This may seem a bold and somewhat handwavey claim, but this paper https://doi.org/10.1038/s41558-025-02325-x did a more in-depth analysis and concludes that 10% wealthiest people of the world contributed 66% of the emissions. Because it is a Pareto distribution, the 1.1% will therefore be responsible for the majority of those emissions, at least 33% (using the 80:20 rule, 2% would contribute 53%).

I feel like I have to do an #introduction post after 3 years on this instance.
I'm sans serif girl - even if, at 40, I'm not a girl anymore (actually I'm not exactly a girl at all 'cause my gender is neutral, but you know force of habit; also in Italian we don't have a neutral equivalent and I'm not very fond of overextended [? I don't even know if this word exists] masculine) but I'm quite attached to this nickname - a neutral person, my pronouns are she/they, I'm #ace, #biromantic, #autistic and #deaf in my left ear.
I'm boring even if I laugh over the stupidest things and on a scale of 1 to 10 my mood is always an honest 5. Like Fiona Apple's meme in my pinned posts I don't like to go out (if it entails socializing and meeting people) except for walking my #dog (I have an old female dog that I love very much) and exploring the #countryside and river banks.
All my interests are things that I can do on my own like #reading, #writing, #MusicListening, watching #OldMovies, going on walks, taking nature #pictures. I told you: boring!
My best friends live far away from me and I'm obviously sad about it, but not so sad as a normal person would be because I don't despise my time alone, on the contrary I quite like it as it allows me to recharge from everyday stressing things like noises, traffic, work, and of course PEOPLE.
When I had my full earing I used to play the bass guitar and ukulele (and a bit of violin) but I quit because with only one ear left I find it quite difficult and a little bit painful. I also loved going to concerts but I can't anymore.
So most of my free time slots now are taken up by reading #manga #manhwa and #manhua, like I used to when I was in my twenties. One has to do something to entertain theirselves, no?
I'm also quite interested in #astrology and #tarots, that I use as a way to better understand myself.
I believe in #accessibility and that's why I'll always demand an alt text on your pictures and won't boost pictures without it.
I don't do immediate follow back because 1. I want to know who is following me 2. even when, after some time, I think someone is ok I almost always forget to reciprocate. But you know: bad friend 🤝 bad mastodon user.
I've clearly forgotten something fundamental but I'll blame the time and my age.
And now for some faves:
- writers: #DaphneDuMaurier #DianaWynneJones #UrsulaKLeGuin #ShirleyJackson #JRRTolkien #NnediOkorafor
- musicians: I've always listened to a lot of kinds of music but if I must choose my all time fave is #JoannaNewsom
- movies: almost all where #CaryGrant starred, plus #ColdComfortFarm #Smultronstället and #NoisesOff
- tv series: #TwinPeaks #VeronicaMars #MontyPythonsFlyingCircus and #MurderSheWrote
- animals: #dogs #goats #donkeys

been thinking about #DavidGraeber a lot lately. i think the Venn Diagram of people trapped in #BullshitJobs and aisloppers is a circle.

i would bet you that if people could earn a living without a bullshit job ―and, yes, a lot of tech work is bullshit― they’d have whole careers and lives outside of this capitalist hellscape.

capitalists are using #AI to gaslight us into believing we need them as the middlemen between our lives and a life worth living.

it’s a lie.

cut the middlemen out.

DDos (Distributed Denial of Service) attack against BlueSky a few days ago: The whole network goes down.

DDoS against mastodon.social today: Lots of users on that instance impacted, the rest of the Fediverse keeps on running, my instance doesn't really notice, messages will be queued up until mastodon.social is reachable again.

Both networks claim to be decentralised and federated. You decide :)

In 1959, Volvo invented the three point seat belt and released the patent to it for free, realising it would save millions of lives.

In 2020 (Covid), James Dyson asked for a tax cut before he would even try to build a ventilator to save a life, then moved his business abroad to avoid tax. He didn't deliver a single ventilator.

Don’t buy a Dyson.
