It provided a massive shift for me as it provided a window into attachment, Harry Harlow's work and the world that made him believe such horrific work was necessary.

It was an extra credit read for a primate class I took (my favorite class) and the insights from that book have shaped so much of my life since.

There are other books but those two continue to shape the trajectory of my intellectual and creative life.

Its not a favorite book or even one I've ranked highly but the way Harris talks about culture began to change how I saw the world and also got me interested in history, even giving me a gradual interest in understanding why history's dates are important.

The framework from the class, from this book and the other textbook did fundamentally shift how I saw the world and how I approached my education going forward.

Another book is Deborah Blum's Love at Goon Park

#ScribesAndMakers 27 Mar—What's a book that made you see the world differently? How?

I'm going all the way back to my very first eye opening college class text for my first Anthropology class (Religion, Witchcraft and Magic):

Cows, Pigs, Wars and Witches by Marvin Harris.

I was 18, history was a subject that focused on questions about random white dudes and the dates they did something big like being born, starting a war or dying. It felt so pointless and disconnected from reality.

Hiya, I would like some assistance to a question.

Do you know of a #linux journal or website that accepts #writing submissions? I just finished the first draft of my “Linux Gaming in 2026” and what a long way we’ve come.

I’m looking to get it #published somewhere but do not know where to submit to. So if you have a website you read that takes online submissions, I’d love to know! Boosts welcome!

@nixCraft These guys always had that energy of someone at an art show looking at a piece of art that appears simple and saying, "pssh, I could make better art than that" and then giving up when their first attempt is exactly as good as every creative person's first attempt.

The harm they've been enabled to do is so enormous and eggregious that the enablers should be red flagged forever.

All of this to say, mostly I'm happy if they want to read my work or enjoy my art but I'm hesitant to actually involve my social circle in my writing because it gives me more freedom to not imagine them as future readers.

I do however write lots of letters and have written things with loved ones as the intended audience. I enjoy sharing my creativity with them but I like having some work where I don't feel that pressure.

What do you feel when a loved one reads your work?

Nerves.

I rarely write my own work with my friends or loved ones in mind as future readers. Mainly because both of my parents were harsh (and knowlegable) critics so I know that personal relationships can be muddied by critique.

I do have an extremely supportive aunt who is an enthusiastic fan and I've grown comfortable over the years sharing my work with her and her spouse. But, she's a wonderful exception.

@nCrazed @stux I'm not minimizing the danger these folks pose (thus the driving example).

But, as long as none of us lose sight of being part of our niches and behaving in ways that create community and provide value, the main way to fight back is to create and stick to house rules.

We don't need to argue and debate with ai folks who cross the line. They violate house rules, they're out. If they can someday behave and earn trust...well...actions speak louder and all.

@nCrazed @stux Its the same way people drive cars. A subset of folks are buying this idea that they are missing everything and must optimize by going faster, doing more, and "work smarter not harder".

It is brainwashing and it has worked on some folks.

The rest of us are living slower and deeper where ever possible. It is so important to take that cleansing breath and double down on that.

Its important not to let their FOMO ways take too much air from where you want to place your attention.

@celesteh I was a teen online in a band's forum and met all sorts of folks in that space. Including a friend who was so nervous to be straight passing and so worried how I would respond when he came out to me. He was so relieved after.

It made an enormous impression on me to have a similar age peer confide in me.

In that case the unmonitored nature of it was so good for both of us. I'm regularly sadden that its so hard to create that for others. It is fragile and difficult to build at scale.
