This petition wants contributing to Free Software to be legally and officially recognized as volunteering in Germany on the same level as youth work or ambulance service:
This would bring fiscal and funding advantages for FLOSS organizations and the volunteers themselves.
If you are a German citizen, please sign the petition and let's get our volunteers the recognition they deserve!

“The Great Software Quality Collapse: How We Normalized Catastrophe”

> I've been tracking software quality metrics for three years. The degradation isn't gradual—it's exponential.
That thing where you don't really wanna say it, but kinda have to: I told you so.
ETA: ugh. Truly not a good article. Sorry.
Scientists found the missing nutrients bees need — Colonies grew 15-fold

Scientists have developed a breakthrough food supplement that could help save honeybees from devastating declines. By engineering yeast to produce six essential sterols found in pollen, researchers provided bees with a nutritionally complete diet that boosted reproduction up to 15-fold. Unlike commercial substitutes that lack key nutrients, this supplement mimics natural pollen’s sterol profile, giving bees the equivalent of a balanced diet.
Great piece on the enshittification of solar by @pluralistic
One thing to add is my sense that many solar companies (at least in the US) are really just finance companies. We got quotes for rooftop solar and the most expensive option was for us to own the installation outright. They want you to lease.
Going with the finance option wouldn't have made us any better off month-to-month, and we couldn't front the cost to own outright, so we just elect a clean energy supplier instead.
More savvy consumers could probably figure out how to do an independent install, but rooftop solar is aggressively marketed by several companies in our area.

This forum is quite good, decent people, good advice:
Also, understanding the three basic architectures is important:
1) String Inverter
2) Micro Inverter (Enphase & others)
3) Optimizer (Solar Edge)
Good luck!
@pluralistic While my experience pales in the scale to your (as usual, amazing) article, I experienced #solar #enshittification firsthand:
My installer bolted a third party #Sunpower charging monitor to my house, which worked great to see what my hourly/daily/yearly output was until Sunpower went bankrupt and was bought out by Enphase, who, you guessed it, wants me to pay a subscription fee to see the same monitoring data. Fuck that.
Fortunately, (#Reddit to the rescue): The data from the microinverters goes through my router, and someone found a hack:
https://github.com/krbaker/hass-sunpower
All I need to do is implement the hack and I get my data back, then reconfigure the router to cut off Enphase! Its like #UnauthorizedBread but for solar.
