InfoSec founders: Who should you hire first—sales or marketing?

Many assume they can find one person to do both, but this rarely works. Marketing and sales require distinct skills, and hiring the wrong role first can slow down your growth.

✅ If you're PLG/e-commerce → Hire marketing first. Build demand, optimize conversions, and create strong messaging before scaling sales.

✅ If you're sales-driven → Hire sales first. Enterprise cybersecurity deals rely on relationships and trust, not just inbound leads.

Bootstrapped? Founders should sell first while outsourcing marketing. Funded? Hiring both works—but only if they collaborate closely.

Sales or Marketing - What function should your startup hire first?

Hiring your first go-to-market person is a big decision. Should it be marketing or sales? Here's how to make the right choice for your cybersecurity startup.

I've had several of my customers ask me why their website is not producing more leads. There are a lot of potential root causes and associated fixes:
✔️ Nail your positioning first
✔️ Define a clear conversion goal
✔️ Map content to the buyer’s journey
✔️ Guide users to the next step
✔️ A/B test—but only if you have enough traffic

I break it all down in my latest blog post:

#OSINT peeps: One of the folks in my network is looking for their next role in OSINT investigations. Her current role requires her to unmask the owners of small real-estate companies in the United States, sometimes only having a picture of the real estate without an address as a starting point (geolocation/visual investigation), but she's looking for a new position starting in Februrary 2025. If you'd like to chat with them, please DM me and I'll put you in touch.

After years of working on cybersecurity product and company naming projects, I’ve built up quite the collection of domain names. Whenever I found a good one, I reserved it—and now I’m offering these domains for sale.

If you're on the hunt for a great name and want to chat, feel free to reach out. You can explore the full list of available domains here: https://cybermarketingclinic.com/domaintrading/
