My local branch of the communal bank (Sparkasse) had a terminal for bank transfers with a keyboard for entering transaction details and next to it a needle printer for statements. You could access both with your magstripe bank card and within the bank those transfers were almost instantaneously booked. As kids we used these facilities to send each other messages across town, on our way(s) to/from school.
