A friend of the #gcobol (#gcc #cobol) project sent us an anthill of code (62Kloc of COBOL and 6Kloc of copybooks) that doesn't compile. Jim's got fixes for some of the problems and we're cataloging the rest. The team's been waiting for some "real code" so this is very exciting!

Happy to chat about looking at yours!

We have been trying to replace coders with some technology since at least COBOL.

My first paying job was to create applications using CASE tool called Synon. That tool was generating COBOL code on a midrange computer called AS/400. I can’t recall that anyone had, not even once, to take a peek at generated COBOL code. It just worked! And we used it from 1990 to 1995, after which I switched to web development.

So, the current FUD about how AI is useless for software development is pure superstition.

Semi-enforced idleness on the nicest weekend of the summer. Busted plans. An auspicious break in the routine.

Listening to recent fedi, note, bridgy talks. “Joy” is the word and it sounds intensely personal and private. I don’t get the feeling it generalizes to design parameters.

Another example of one side thinking they are ahead of the other side and/or that the other side doesn't know what they are doing. Amusing.

Can the West Still Win? Analyzing Claims of Ukraine's Coming Tech Supremacy Over Russia

Welcome to this month’s first exclusive paid content. It’s another thorough, ~5,400 word article that seeks to answer the question I’ve been asked by some readers over the past few months: is there a possibility that Ukraine can still achieve victory in this war? I look at the question through the technological lens, as whatever real chance at victory Ukraine may have remains tied into its one and only arguable advantage: the Western-supplied drone and AI tech.
